New Fender Antigua models...

Hey guys, I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a P. What can you tell me about the neck finish? They appear from the pics I've been able to find to have glossy headstocks, but a satin finish on the back of the neck. Some photos appear to have glossy fingerboards, some look unfinished. I'm sure it's just different lighting in the photos I'm seeing, but I want to know for sure before I buy. Set me straight, guys.

Nobody's anwered my question about the Jazz pickups yet. Are they noisy? Do I need to start researching replacement pickups? I'm not a fan of noisy pickups.

They are a standard Jazz single coil so they can be noisy with one on by itself. Hum bucking with both on, The standard Jazz Bass thing. :hmm: :)

Having said that, they are not a bad sounding pickup.

Yeah, my P is glossy - but in a nice way! :D Seriously, though...I'd recommend that you pull the trigger (if you are inclined). They play really nice - look....well.....it is Antigua....and they have a great tone. Lastly, I'd suggest that you hurry - they are completely gone from Fender now and most places have sold out.

One thing I think that's funny. Everyone loved the road worn except they didn't want a beat up bass. Now Fender gives us an accurate repro of a classic color, and most specs are true to original, and people still don't like them. Hahaha, fine with me, I have road worn P and J and now the Antigua P. All I can say is you're missing out on great Fenders that you won't have to take a loan out to buy.

Joe, really curious to hear what your thoughts are on the sound of the Jazz with stock pick ups. While the P seems to be the bomb out of the box, I am hearing mixed reports on Jazz tone.

Not bad-mouthing anything. I was prepared for this prior to purchase. Just making conversation.

Just checked my UPS tracking. If they deliver on the 4th of July, I may be getting mine early. :hyper: It's currently in NJ, which means it'll be in NY by the end of the day.

As for the sound and the stock pickups, I'm hoping to love this bass. You and I it seems are Bongo/Stingray/MM guys. It's difficult for me to make the transition. I checked your gear and noticed you have a Highway One, but swapped out the pickups. I had a Highway One and sold it. Sounded great in the house, felt great, but got real thin sounding in a band setting. I'm hoping to like this more, but willing also to swap out the pickups if necessary. I feel I really need a jazz in my aresenal, and just haven't been able to fall in love with one. Will post my opinions once I get it into a band setting. Definitely want to hear your opinions too, and probably people's recommendations for replacement pickups. If I replace the pickups, I'm going to shoot for the most traditional J funk sound I can get, even if it's not what I'm used to. :) Not looking to make this sound like a MM, which is where I think I may have gone wrong in all my past J bass experiences.

I think you're on the right track. MM is MM and Fender is Fender. Nary shall they cross tonal paths.

The Highway One is the most comfortable P that I have ever played. I did not like the pick ups. They sounded OK but you never bit your lower lip and made sexy bass faces when you dug in and started moving air.

I installed the new Aguilar 4P-60's. Almost perfect but still had a hair too much gank/clack for my liking. It was probably the grease bucket. Switched to TI Flats and left the grease bucket in and Ta Da ! For my ears, warm and loving but when you pull her hair, just a touch of snarl/growl. Great range of P tones. In spite of attempting over and over to spend more time on other basses, this bass and appear to be inseperable. Hopefully the Antigua P will force me to give it a bit of a rest.

Now the Statatory Grape Jazz I am still fighting with. Perfect tone but output is ridiculously low with Fender Customs, even by passive standards. Lindys or Nors should fix it.

Sorry for the derail. Back to our regularly scheduled program, the paint scheme that most people love to hate!

On my J, I installed a cheap set of Dunlop 40-100 strings (was given with the bass) to replace the original 45-105 gauge. I have to say that the output with stock pups is rather low. Definitely lower than any of my P's (even my CS 55).

Tonewise, it's not that fat, and with a mid peak around 800-900 hz. I'm not sure I like this so far. You MM guys would probably be familiar with that tone. It's definitely the Fender bass that I've had that reminds me the more a MM. Not a copy of course, but you know what I mean...

Another bad thing is the bridge. Cheap. Fragile. Don't like it. Even the AM vintage series bridges are better. Also, the 1st and 4th strings are not enough 'on the edge' of the neck (to my taste), and the bridge doesn't allow placement.

Finally, another fact that reminds me why prefer the P over the J : the 1st and 4th strings are louder/hotter with standard pups if the strings height follow the neck radius.

Not sure if it's a keeper for me. The finish is awsome though...

I've always wanted a P bass. I play Heavy Metal and primarily use a Music-Man Bongo 5 in stealth with dual humbuckers. I also own a a Music-Man Bongo 6 in black with chrome hardware and dual humbuckers. But I've always wanted a Fender Precision bass.

When I first heard about this Fender FSR Antigua Precision Bass coming out I knew I had to get it. I have never owned a P bass before but always wanted one but didn't want to own an ordinary one or one that has been seen a thousand times before. So I bought this a couple weeks back and am posting pics now that I have changed the pickups to EMG's and put a Badass Bass Bridge II on it.

I have yet to plug this sucker into my rig but cannot wait to when I get out of work I am blasting this **** to 11.

They are gloss but not super high gloss. Don't think thick wavy 70's Fender gloss. The finish seems thin and very well done, if it is to glossy for you knock it down with some four 0000 steel wool or rubbing compound.
