New Fender Antigua models...

I had a highway one and got rid of it. this bass is a keeper. like it much, much more for a variety of reasons that I think I may have already posted, so I won't again. :) I don't think though that I mentioned the sharp frets that the highway one had... the neck on the antigua feels perfect.

Why would you be? I got my first Indonesian Squier after I had just gotten my '08 MIA Jazz, and I wasn't even remotely disappointed. I liked the Squier for what it was, an excellent bass at an excellent price. I suspect the same will go for a MIM as well.

all i can say is WOW! i expressed some concern about purchasing a MIM....and how mistaken i was.......this MIM jazz antigua is nothing but awesome.....two 2012 MIA's and now a 2012 MIM, in the the last month and a half and i will admit without a doubt Fender has reallly truly stepped it up. i am super satisfied! havent been happier!! :hyper:

It's too bad that Fender cheapened out on the pickguards on these basses with the painted beveled edges...

Something just doesn't look right about not having the beveled black/white/black pickguard edges. Having the edges painted over just looks wrong...and cheap.

Here's what the pickguards should look like...makes the difference between looking like a cheap copy and an authentic Fender:

Grabbed a quick phone shot. I'll try and get some better pics taken this weekend.

Both basses are a heck of a lot of fun to play and sound fantastic to my ears.

I was surprised that the neck on the Jazz has a little more depth (thickness) than the Highway Ones. I only noticed for about the first 10 seconds of playing but I thought it worth mentioning for those that prefer a little more meat.

Still trying to decide if I want to add TI Flats to the P.

i was also really surprised with the neck and sound of the jazz! it is very beefy, i personally love it. i also noticed it immediately and was real happy. i love the tone and depth that this allows!

I think the new pickguards look much better specifically because it is painted completely. It looks much more elegant without the BWB bevel showing

I fee the same way. I wasn't looking for period correct/exact copies. Just the feel of the shade/finish. I think that Fender attempted to bring back the color without going overboard with an exact copy of the original.

I am certain that if the poster above wanted the ply to be visible, he could send the bass off to Marty Bell or some other refinisher (with a new pick guard) and he/they could match the shading. It can't cost that much to paint a PG.

I am totally loving this bass. I wanted so badly to love the highway one because it was american made, and I got it at an awesome price. I even went through 2 of them, thinking maybe I was nuts the first time. It just couldn't cut it for me. Tone was too thin, and it wouldn't do the things I wanted it to. The main reason I wanted a jazz is cuz I started playing in a zep tribute last year, and a bongo just isn't the bass for that gig. :) I can get away with my Big Al, but I wanted to do it right.

Used it again last night at a zep rehearsal. The other guys are as happy as I am. This bass really really gets where it needs to go. And to be a little more clear about the digging in thing I mentioned in an earlier post, last night was the first time I dug in with a pick, and it totally does this kinda thing, with ease .

Sooo tempted to make a move on the P... last MIM P I had (the deluxe) I hated though. Going to have to wait for more reviews, and sell a couple more basses before I can make a move.

Pretty wild Joe. I have two of them, a P and a J. The P pick ups got stripped and I added Aguilars, leaving the tone bucket in it. It is amazing sounding, especially when you dig in.

The J was a project that was sent for refin. I put custom sixties and the danged thing was just too quiet. Ordered Lindys and we'll how that goes.

Both my necks were great. My luthier failed to find a single high fret.

I guess QC stunk back then.

That said, at this point, I can't find an argument to buy an MIA versus these unless you move to Select or Custom.

Which Aguilars did you use (assuming they sell more than one P pup!)?

Aguilar AG 4P-60. They were allegedly modeled after a 63-64 Fender P.

They have a number of pick ups although I am unsure how many models for P's. These were just released in the last couple of months.

Fantastic tone for my ears. Most importantly, when you dig in, they growl sweetly ! Wooly on firm initial attacks and right back to crystal clear.

They sound so good that you look for every opportunity while playing to grab a handful, without messing up the dynamics of a song.

With the TI flats, absolutely monster tone.

While I love the tone on the Antigua P and have no desire to pull the stock pups, I can assure you if they even crackle a single time, another set of Aguilars will get the nod.

Be sure to read a few of the reviews. I saw one where someone thought that they were a little dark for his taste. I don't see how they could be called dark but we all have our individual tastes.
