Been hoping the same thing for quite awhile now.
How's about Fiesta / Tort / Rosewood to start?
I like the white one more and more - make it black and I'd buy one today (provided the individual copy played and sounded good). I think they're great.
I remember the Fender Japan bass you are talking about. You could get in either natural ash or black a few years back. I think it was a nod to the bass in the Fender book mentioned in this thread (which is a gorgeous bass.)
This is my dream bass! Both of the color options offered are my two favorite color combinations- I've wanted a black block/maple neck on my Precision forever; I can't believe they finally came out with one!Now to figure out how to overcome the whole "broke teenager" thing...
Looks good, except maybe go with MOP blocks.
That white one is so cool. Don't miss the aesthetic of the black blocks matching the pickguard. That's like the curtains matching the shades, if you know what I mean... sexy.
I don't like the thumb rest on top. I still use the pickup as a thumb rest. I actually like it when the thumb rest is in the "tug bar" position, even though I never play that way. It's a vintage vibe thing.
Man, if they price this right I'm all over it. The only other way to get one is to build it from parts.
You know, you're right about the pickguard and the blocks. I wonder what a white PG and MOP blocks would look like? Probably retail for $849, maybe $799?
I have a jazz like that...it's very white, almost ethereal, like something an angel would play. But it's a cool look too.
Meh... If the neck was wider (1.75" at nut) then I'd bite, but as far as I'm concerned, it does nothing for me - especially the black block inlays - those are lame. Now, if it were black pearloid or white pearloid block inlays with matching binding, well, I'd be tempted - but it's still a "no," just because of the small neck >_>
I'll try to remember to take a picture of that page, next time I have my camera out and post it here

This one is MIM, along with the rest of the classic series line. Fender Japan do however make a 70's spec P-Bass series which is built to period correct specs (correct fretboard radius, fret size, range of colours etc). This includes the natural ash model you saw. The Classic Series are great instruments but I'm a MIJ enthusiast so I'd rather get my hands on one of those, if it weren't for the import taxes. BTW, I believe the late, great Ron Asheton of the Stooges briefly played an early 70's sunburst P-Bass with a R/W block & bound Jazz neck when he switch to bass in the 70's.

I could have sworn the standard P-bass nut width nowadays is 1.625 since its on all of their MIM and MIA standards, even the Squiers use them, too. 1.75" (from what I've seen thus far) have been on the reissues or similar like the Classic series, American Vintage, or signature basses such as Roger Waters & Steve Harris.
Don't mind me though, it's just me being spoiled by those wide necks. I'm so ashamed! Well... not really.

I'm sure that you're right (I too only have a 1.75" neck P Bass). It was just your use of the phrase "smaller neck" that made me think you meant smaller than a normal P Bass, rather than smaller than what you were used to on you vintage P

Anyway, as someone who gets on OK with both, but finds the 1.5" Jazz neck a little too tight at times, I'm really quite looking forward to getting my hands on one of these.In fact, that white bass is, believe it or not, exactly built to my 'dream specifications' (apart from not having a Lindy Fralin Vintage pickup in
, although the standard one may turn out to be perfectly suitable). If I can find one that is 9lb or so, I'll be a very happy bunny .
A 70's Pbass should have a brass nut , badass bridge and Dimarzios . That's what everybody was doing to them at the time ...
