new gibson and epiphone basses coming out

IMO, the Les Paul recording was a great bass. Re-issue that one, in 4 and 5 string full scale versions, Solid and semi hollow version, and maybe a 4 and 5 string version of the old EB-1 violin looking bass. A fretless 5 string EB-1 with a telescoping upright stand would be kind of cool too.

Gibson basses are a niche market. If a Gibson sound is what you want, you'll get one. People still buy them if they want one.Gibson doesn't have to make anything new because they still do sell, just not a level of Fender Basses.

I mean hell, look at Gibson guitars. They've been making SGs, Les Pauls, Explorers, Flying Vs and Firebirds for year.

IMO Gibson guitars and basses are iconic of rock and roll, and they will always keep these flagship models because of that fact.

Hell, Gibson has made a lot more new basses than Rickenbacker at least :D

Personally, I'd love it if they made a 34" scale, 5-string, bolt-on Les Paul bass in olympic white with an anodized gold pickguard and EMGs on it. That would be nice. Too nice even; I know it's a pipe dream.

It's sad how Gibson's a great brand that really has come up short on the bass department.

Both would be cool reissues, as would the Ripper, Grabber, G3 line.

I think Gibson is a bit afraid to reissue those though. Probably looking back and saying they weren't that successful then they probably won't be now.

I absolutely agree with you.

Although I don't blame Fender for sticking to the classic P and J basses as they completely dominate the market. Gibson doesn't.

For a company that does so well with electric and acoustic guitars, it is IMO a no brainer to use your dominant position and brand recignition to grow into other markets.

EBMM is IMO a bass company but they are starting to bring out some pretty cool guitars.

I am stunned how useless Gibson are with their basses. You can have an SG, or a Thunderbird. I think whoever runs the Product Design department of Gibson must have been reading from the same text book Henry Ford studied:

"You can have the model T in any colour you like; as long as its black."

Getting a white or black (as in Goth) Thunderbird is hard, really hard! Why so? Why not do what Fender does and gives people a colour chart?

Gibson, get your classics re-issued, reinvent as with the Fender American series, get some artist models (Twiggy Ramirez signature Thunderbird?) and MAKE A NEW BASS! :bassist:

Not to derail this thread from Gibson bashing/Fender bashing, but I just saw a cool short scale SG today. I know its not a new model, but it had a natural finish and the body was a thick maple top over (I guess) mohogany...a combo I haven't seen before.

It was really, really nice. I'm not a short scale or four string guy, but if I had an extra grand lying around I think I would have bought it. Felt like it was about 7.5 pounds, the neck shape was real comfy, quality looked good, sounded good--really growly out of the bridge. I was impressed with it.

Honestly, from first impressions, if I had to pick between a 08 American J, P or one of these...I don't know, I might pick this.

Well it "might" sell (check my avatar) but most people won't buy it. Yes folks that's a 72 Telecaster II with a mudbucker. Toss flats on it and it sounds like a Gibson on steroids. However unlike a Gibson it actually plays decently. I honestly never liked any SG bass period. Now the Grabbers and Rippers are a different story. Nice basses but never made a dent in Fender's sales and those were supposed to lure Fender buyers away.

I for one would love to see some "new" bass designs from Gibson, but can we really expect that from a company that is known more for their guitars. :eyebrow:

Besides a company already made a better Gibson bass than Gibson can ever build. Don't forget the Warwick Jack Bruce model. Now that IS a bass I'd buy if I had the $$
