new gibson and epiphone basses coming out

The body and neck were both maple. The body was about twice as thich as a Ric 4003 and the neck felt like 1/2 of a baseball bat. Seriously, it was heavy.

I'd like to pick me up a Victory Artist (2 pickup), Ripper, or RD Artist.

Here's an interesting story about the RD basses. Gibson had originally designed it to be a John Entwistle signature bass. Entwistle even had the first 2 prototypes ever built because Gibson gave them to him to try out. He didn't like them though.

Felt like it was about 7.5 pounds, the neck shape was real comfy, quality looked good, sounded good--really growly out of the bridge. I was impressed with it.

Honestly, from first impressions, if I had to pick between a 08 American J, P or one of these...I don't know, I might pick this.

It's called the SG Supreme. It was the guitar of the month in January 2008. Only 400 were made. I have #137.

It's an awesome sounding bass by the way.

The Gibson Les Paul is my favorite type of electric guitar by far. The classic Gibson humbucker sound is *it* for me.

Yet, Gibson basses have never held any appeal for me whatsoever. With the exceptions of heavily modified Gibson basses played by Phil Lesh and Jack Casady in the old days, I have found their basses to be somewhat lacking.

Curious that they haven't done more with their bass lineup.

Really similar, but it wasn't the same. Same pups. Different bridge and tuners. No crown inlay on the headstock and I think it had dot inlays, but I could be remembering wrong. Also, when I said natural finish I actually meant satin finish.

Also, it was selling for $1050 new. As pricey as Gibsons are, I imagine yours was more than that.

I have a 4-string fretless epi EB-1 with the stand... I put some black rubbery coated strings on it and it's kinda cool. I've used it to record where I really needed that sound, no good live, it feels cheap and shoddy. But for the $90 I paid for it, it's been useful.

The OP asked about Epiphones too. I saw an Epi in a pawn shop today. It was near brand new, made in China. It was, I'd guess, the Epi reissue version of the Gibson EB3L. Two pickups, long 34 inch scale, cherry finish. Set neck, not bolt on. It looked surprisingly good. I was feeling that tug, you know, temptation to buy, then I remembered I made the switch to 5 string and haven't been playing fours lately.:p

I just looked it up on MF. They call it the EB3 SG.

I had one of those and wish I didn't get rid of it. It sounded suprisingly good.

That is my '87 Gibson IV. It is actually a really nice bass. Mahogany body and neck (set neck), ebony fingerboard and TB Plus pickups. Sounds like a Thunderbird, looks like a Fender. Lightweight and well balanced. The two things I don't like about it are the pointy headstock (it was the 80s), and the wide neck. I think if they would put out a new version of this bass with a normal headstock and more current look it would sell really well. A bass for people that like the sound of a Thunderbird, but not the neck dive and other issues Tbirds have.

i already saw that thing months ago for the first time.if you dont know it didnt just come out like weeks ago,its been out for a while.i was like maybe theyll reissue the bass version. well,it was about may when i thought that. and im still waiting. but if they do theres still another downfall(in my case anyway);i HATE silverburst.so even if it did come out,idk if i would be interested seeing that being the only color for it to come out in anytime soon.

this thread isnt a fender vs. gibson thread.does anyone know about any new gibson or epiphone basses???
all i know is about the new nikki sixx thunderbird(like we really need another one...) and the shavo thunderbird.thats it. but i swear theres gotta be more.

i really agree with you guys though. i wish that they would reissue the RD's and rippers(not in silverburst)hell i would even take an epiphone ripper if they reissued that...but i think they should do something

Anybody that REALLY KNOWS the specifics of all the Gibson models I listed already knows they tried alot of different things and were way more willing to inovate in terms of body shapes, pick up designs, scale length, woods and construction. Why bother with comparison? They're different, they were meant to be, and always will be just that. If I may quote from another forum "Gibson basses are a voice, not an echo"
I'd love to see them re-issue just about anything, I'll buy!

It's all taste but I've never found one that I liked and it's not because I only play two-octave necks (although I do). If held @ serious gunpoint, I'd grab a Fender Jazz rather than any Gibby. But why they cannot come up with something that will kick conservative Fender in the #@!@ is beyond me. Perhaps I'm just not bright.
