New GK Lead Sleds

I love that these exist, but I imagine the class D GK heads will out sell these 10 - 1, partially because the market has moved on from "lead sleds" especially at a premium over their lighter siblings and also because it's still easy to get the previous RB ii amps second hand for peanuts.

I love my 700RB II but there is nothing here compelling to upgrade, for me. I hope for GK they sell to their expectations.

I don't think I've witnessed such animosity here at T.B. towards a manufacturers recent release of a new amp
I'm with you, Stan!
We all hear things differently, but certain discussions (how much amps weigh, or if tonewood is a thing) seem to bring out the worst in folks.
Odd that some topics seem to activate "Lord of the Flies" mode - which makes me glad that discussion of politics and religion are verboten on TalkBass.

If a person doesn't value the opinions of others enough to disagree respectfully, I add that person to my "Ignore" list.

Anyhow, in an attempt to get the signal:noise ratio back on track, I'll say this:
I've owned almost every generation of GK amps: 400RB, 800RB, 400RB-III, 1001RB, 700RB-II, Fusion 550, MB800, and now a Legacy 800.
They have all been fantastic.
They all sound like GKs - and I'm sure the RB-Legacy will too.

If an amp doesn't sound how you want it to sound, there are other amps - you're under no obligation to purchase something that doesn't inspire you.

Correct. He also uses IEM’s and a hell of a FOH system. Cabs are mic’ed and combined with a DI for FOH and IEM’s. Not really used for stage monitoring per se.

Thats not where I was going with that comment at all . and perhaps they jam with just the rigs. thats how I usually do it ,
anytime I can ditch the IEMs and jam old school style is a good day.

This was when we swapped my 700RB-II for your Legacy 800. Funny that we listened to the same two amps and came to opposite conclusions.
I'm still loving that Legacy 800.
Reading your comments from the GK Rules! thread about the Legacy makes me feel like I didn't spend enough time with that amp ...especially when you mentioned backing off the trim a bit to thicken it up and get it closer to an RB . I didn't try that at all, thinkin i didn't need to Using a passive p bass with a vintage pickup , I wish i would have now.
I guess the problem I had was in my head , since im so used to the Boost knob being attached to the power amp side on the RB , I couldn't get what I wanted with it being on the preamp side of the Legacy .And while the Legacy sounded fantastic into the effects loop/power amp of the RB , when I plugged the pre of the RB into the legacy eff-loop/Power amp, that's when i discovered the "boxy" thing .
I might have to revisit that amp .

If we take that concept to its ultimate logical conclusion, AI can be employed to provide bass for recording and live. No finger would be lifted.
To me that’s apples to oranges. There’s a difference between using a 5 lb tool to create and a 25 lb tool to create. If you wanna swing a 25 lb hammer as opposed to a 5lb hammer then that’s your prerogative. Physics dictates you’re expending more energy. If you think it’s worth the extra work…Have at it.

Using AI to create isn’t creating, it’s getting someone / something else to do the work for you. I’d liken that analogy more to using a roadie as opposed to toting your own gear! 😂😂

My initial post was not disparaging, it was simply questioning what the market is for a 26 lb amp in today’s market. I guess time will tell!

Wow!

Just read through this thread.

I don't think I've witnessed such animosity here at T.B. towards a manufacturers recent release of a new amp that was created to fill some of GK's users requests.

We should be celebrating that there's yet another great choice in bass amplification available to us...
I agree whole heartedly. My initial post was questioning what the market is for a 26 lb head these days. I guess we will see.

I agree - you aren't the person I added to my ignore list today;)
But the 26# weight wouldn't slow me down much if I was still playing metal and needed an amp capable of doing structural damage.
Back then my whole amp rig was well over 300#...

Manufacturers have to put their R&D where customers are buying.
As a result, the market evolves - and sometimes "better performance" AND "easier to use" go together:
I have an old digital camera with a Leica lens. My iPhone takes better pictures.

Musical instruments are a small market with a lot of nostalgic inertia.
Gear designers have to straddle the line between what customers want, and what will keep the company afloat.
It's a tough spot to be in - but GK has been relevant and independent in the music industry for a long time.

I'm willing to bet that GK has heard requests from their artist roster for these amps.
I wouldn't be surprised if they knew - by name - who the first 100 units were going to.

It's because people don't want an amp that is better than what they already have because they can't afford a new amp

I'm in construction ... so now your talkin my language ! ...sometimes you need a 5lb hammer for the job .. sometimes you need a 25lb hammer ... to get the job done RIGHT ...and if my employees complain about a measly 20lbs ... i tell them they are whiny wimps that are lazy .

GK revamped the RB ....they weigh about the same as the originals , Orange revamped the AD200b .... and it weighs 57 lbs ... and I can't WAIT to get one!!!! and I don't care about the weight because i'm not a whiny wimp

I'm sure your employees really enjoy that lecture...

Are you suggesting that players who choose a lighter weight amp are whiny wimps? To me, that seems awfully disrespectful to players that make different choices than you do.

no , i'm suggesting that 20lbs doesn't really mean much when all your doing is picking it up to put it on top of a speaker cabinet .

but if you want to take it out of context , that's your prerogative.

and if my employees can't handle such an insignificant comment , they won't like what the other construction workers say then either

No one should be surprised by this any more. We're as though occupied by cults, more and more obviously. Not as bad if you keep it in mind.

It’s not just placing the amp On top of a cabinet, it’s loading the truck it’s carrying it to the venue, many players use mass transit (especially in Europe and large cities here like NY), some have experienced back surgery or other issues that impact their ability to carry 25 lbs long distances (or okay standing with heave basses), etc.

I worked as a union stagehand for many years, I know the difference between kidding around and disrespectful. Our shop stewards did too and they nipped disrespectful behavior before it cause more serious issues. We worked with a lot of international touring crews and it’s not hard for something to get out of control.

Let’s assume that you were kidding…
