New GK Plex Preamp

So slow attack and slow or very slow release?
I depends on what you're going for, and it depends on the particular compressor.... That's why I said 'the rest is all seasoning.' I see now that the settings for attack and release are 'bundled' into presets. So yes it would be nice to be able to edit. Or just turn it off and use your Diamond until it can be edited....?. But I get that that's a bummer if you'd like a one-pedal solution.

Higher ratio? Should I try going to 20:1 instead of 4:1?

I wouldn't suggest it. I think he means that having a higher ratio will allow the effect to be more prominent; so with proper settings, 4:1 will sound punchier than 2:1...20:1 will severely squash whatever dynamic range your signal would have, which is why it's used mainly to limit peaks.

So I've pretty much been using the PLEX on voice setting 5 (which means no PLEX EQ function) with a Southampton Ictineo into the effects loop which means the Ictineo is providing the tone. At the end of the day it just sounds better. So the PLEX is essentially the tuner, OD, compressor, and DI out. The Ictineo is the preamp. Strange? Maybe but I'm happy with the arrangement.

There is NO shame in that! The Sub is a great preamp

I would try the same thing man! You never know until you try

Technically, the Plex is still the preamp because you have the Ictineo wired as an effect.

Just curious, but do you feel the Ictineo provides something that the Plex is missing, or is it that you just prefer the tone of the Ictineo over the Plex?

Not in this case. Setting 5 entirely bypasses the EQ section, leaving the compressor, Overdrive, and tuner as the only functions. It's a pretty convenient feature to have.

I understand, but does that really mean it's bypassing the preamp circuitry?

I don't claim to be an electronics expert, but isn't the "preamp" a specific piece of the circuitry? After that comes EQ, OD, etc.

With that in mind, he's utilizing the Plex' preamp but using the Ictineo as an EQ effects pedal. Yes, the Ictineo has a preamp in it, but it's really being piggy-backed on the Plex' preamp.

I totally agree that being able to bypass the EQ is a great feature. Just one more reason why the Plex is such a versatile tool.

In this case, you are absolutely right as the signal does indeed first go through a pre before getting converted (A/D). It doesn't color the incoming signal though; and generally, I refer to "preamps" when there is some coloration occurring (EQ or otherwise). My bad.

And that's the misconception that I wasn't sure about. I did a little research before I posted to see if maybe the industry referred to a preamp and EQ as one in the same. In most cases, where you find a preamp, there's some EQ circuitry, so I didn't know if my thinking was full of $#!& or not. :smug:
