New GK Plex Preamp

Got to try my new Plex at a gig last night. It was a last minute gig, as in I was out the door within an hour of getting the phone call, but it paid handsomely.

It was an outdoor gig. Hamburger/sandwich restaurant with a large patio and a 10x10 raised stage in one corner. Because it was last minute, we could only rustle up three of us, one acoustic and one electric guitar and me on bass. We were just missing our percussionist and harmonica player.

I was able to quickly dial in a good sound. I stayed with voice #2 and turned off the bass bump. Compressor attack on 2 and ratio on 1. Sliding the Plex back in the gig bag moved some knobs so I'm not 100% sure what the compressor level and threshold were, but I believe the level and threshold were about 10:00.

As for EQ, when I first plugged in, I set everything flat and it was a bit muddy for my liking. I kept the bass and low mid flat and turned the high mid and treble to about 1:30. Treble was maybe a little more at 2:00. It was perfect after that.

I plugged the Plex into the input of my amp. I set the gain at about 10:00 and the volume at about 9:30. The master on the Plex was also about 10:00. That was plenty loud enough against the guitars

A couple of times during the evening, I noticed the level drop off between songs when I stopped playing. I would pluck a string and it was like everything was off or turned down, but on the next pluck, it was back to normal. I seem to remember reading something about that here in this thread a while back. Does it ring any bells with anyone?

It was a simple set up but still, I was very pleased. I'm really lovin' this little unit.

I'm building a new pedalboard around the PLEX for ampless rehearsals.
Anyone else doing this?

I have the most boring settings when using it in a chain
Voice 2
Flat EQ
Output is up pretty high (but not pinned)
No compression or overdrive

BUT it sounds killer.

Hi Tony,
I'm using it as my main tone shaper into the effects return of my SWR. Voice #1(love the 800RB! :)) slight bump in the lows, slight cut in the low mids, slight boost on the high mids and treble. I have the overdrive set on 1 but switch back and forth between clean and grit. I'm still messing with the compressor but I have it set very lightly when I switch it on.
I just updated the firmware last night. Quick and easy! I'm looking forward to some updates. Hopefully GK hasn't forgotten us! It's a great little box.
Cheers,
Brent

@BrentSimons That is a good tonal palette right there. That's similar to how I have mine often set.

I'd like to get some commentary going around the compressor settings everyone uses. Anybody care to share how they run the compressor? I'm looking for punchy settings. I used to use a Diamond compressor and frankly miss it for its tonal magic it used to infuse. I can't seem to duplicate it yet with the PLEX. But I'm not giving up. Let's hear how you all are using the PLEX compressor.

I've got mine set 2 to 1 with attack set on the medium attack medium release setting. Sorry I don't have the manual in front of me. Setting #3? With the threshold at about 8 o'clock. I think I may have heard some pumping through my headphones last night so ill probably need to work with my settings. I'm just trying to even out some peaks when I dig in!

The best setting (for me), so far has been Lvl 1:00 (Attack 2) / Thresh 11:30 (Ratio 1)

This is best least-obtrusive, slightly-fattening, barely-there comp setting I've used so far. The compressor always seems to be noticeable when it kicks it no matter how light the setting I use. I'm wondering if there will be some way to edit the comp pre-sets in the future.

Of course, all of this is highly dependent on your input gain, pickups, and on-board preamp settings.

Thank you Ricky I'm going to try that out too!

Try the Diamond in the effects loop of the PLEX!! Let us know how it sounds.

I don't have a PLEX but have a bit of experience with compressors. Generally, a slow-ish attack is your friend for punch. This allows the initial hit of each note to come through. The rest is all seasoning.

Ok. I've been playing around with the compressor this evening. I want a setting for slow attack and medium release or slow attack and fast release. Basically the opposite of Level 1 on the Attack knob.

Which is why I hope GK allows for editing these parameters. Attack 2 is as close as you can get, unfortunately.
