New GR bass Active Cabs

I've been informed that they are separate balance controls for the tweeter and woofer.
Thanks, that's what I suspected when I played around with them. It would be against the nature of the design of they were part of the amp.
I'm quite ecstatic about my 12" 350 ACT. Arrived yesterday and made its debut with a band rehearsal last night. Sounds really good!! I'm using a Caveman BP1C in front of it.
And it is ridiculously lightweight!

Yes, I've tried the 12' ACT, and really liked it. I'm getting a 1x10" ACT to make commuting easier, it's even lighter than my Markbass 801. Depending on how I get on with the 10" I might get the 12" or 2x10"v.

How are you liking the GR active cab? I have a Markbass 801 as well and have my eye on the GR 110 active cabinet. How do they compare?

I ended up with 2 2x10 active cabs. Very happy with them, excellent quality. For bass guitar, I use a Genzler preamp, and they also work great with electric piano, I run them in stereo with a Boss GE200 (stereo graphic eq).

Did you get to compare the Markbass 801 and GR 110 active?

I have the 801 and really like it. I do a lot of small acoustic jazz gigs where it's perfect but it's just a bit small for some of the louder drummers I play with. If the GR puts out a lot more sound it might make sense for me. If they are close I might just keeep what I have as I do have other bigger, and heavier, options.

There is no comparison. The GR 110 is a lot louder, lighter and has better clarity, imo, but it is a lot more expensive than the 801. The 801 works really well for what it is, and I’ve used it in many bass / acc piano duos. For double bass the GR110 would be a good choice, but the GR112 or 210 would be a better choice for bass guitar. Not that the 110 isn’t great, but if you’re spending that sort of money, the 112 or 210 will give you more volume, and low end.

Hey folks, are you able to turn the tweeter completely off on these new GR active cabs? I'm looking at getting the 2x12 to run with my preamps and ditch my amp but use a fair bit of dirt so don't want tweeters.
Yes you can. All GR Bass cabs have a 3 way selector for the tweeter: On, Half, and Off.

EDIT: that's wrong - the active cabs only have 2 knobs to control the high and the low frequencies

I'm using a Sushi Box Nobelium (Noble clone) in front of my 12"/350. Absolutely glorious tone on fretted and fretless. And plenty loud 😁
Interesting to see that we're only starting to see a few examples of preamp + ACT cabs, since a lot of members are using preamps or modelers as their main gear, and want to find either a power amp + cab, or an active cabs, and there are not so many options available (very few power amps that work well for bass without the EQ controls of a full amp, and even fewer available powered cabinnets except GR Bass).

I know GR Bass stuff is pricey and difficult to find, but this combo SB Nobelium + GR ACT cab is seems to be killer, I'm sure a lot of us don't know about GR ACT cabs and would love this solution.

One thing I wonder though: in general, people in search of an active cab for their modeler or tube preamp want it to be "FRFR".
GR Bass don't use the term "FRFR" for their (active and passive) cabs, but they describe it as very transparent and uncolored.

Do you confirm it's actually very transparent?

In my ears the GR active 12/350 is transparent. There are actually

small treble and bass controls on the back of the cab to fine-tune it. With the tubes pedal in front it gets quite warm 😎

For bass, I use a Genzler preamp with a 210 ACT cab. I have 2x210 ACT cabs that I use for keyboards. Digital pianos sound much better in stereo as they have stereo samples which don’t sound so great when summed to mono. I found the cabs to be a little bass heavy for keyboards, but a Boss stereo 10 band graphic cures that and is an easy fix for rooms with varying acoustics.

On the active cabs you can turn the treble down hard. But it's not an on/off switch. I have the 12" /350watt.

Thanks for the reply, that's a bummer as I don't really like tweeters as I use dirt a fair bit. Shame as I was hoping to get the ACT 212 and do away with my head/cabs. Unfortunately I can't actually try the cabs first and see if the tweeter is ok on low with my pedals etc. Oh well, good excuse not to spend $2.5k AUD haha.

Would be interested to hear from any of you guys that have them if they play nice with distortion/fuzz? Or even from @GR Bass Staff - how come you cannot turn off the tweeter?

I'm sure you would be fine using just the "high" control if needed, and in the worst case if it doesn't suffice, you could insert a cab sim or a variable HPF/LFP pedal between the preamp and the active cab. Well, it's just my guess, but I would take the risk.

The tweeter control on my AT210 ACT effectively reduces high frequencies. Works fine.
