New GR bass Active Cabs

Hey Guys -
Just curious, if need be, can a GR active cabinet be used as a passive cab as well with a standard head? I haven't been able to locate any specific info regarding this question.
You would not be able to connect from the power amp in your head directly to the speaker.
If your head has an effects loop you could go from the Send on the amp to the input on the Active cab. But then your head's power amp would be redundant....
Better with a nice preamp; pedal or rack format; in front of the Active cab. The active cab works fine going directly from an active bass or a high output passive bass too.

Yep, I'll be using mine with the JHS Punchline. ;)

I'm jonesin' for a Punchline - how do you like it?
@John D Harris -
Bar none, and other than some of my basses, it's the most valuable piece of gear I've ever owned - you won't find a more enthusiastic disciple than me.
I've had mine since June, and have played both indoor and outdoor gigs for audiences ranging from 100 to 4,000 people. My tone has never been better or more satisfying than it is now - my sound onstage with my band is the best it's ever been, and my tone sounds amazing through the FOH.

Truth be told, mine was a gift that I expected to return. However, when it took me all of 5 minutes to dial in a killer tone using all features, I was hooked. In a nutshell, it's a tool with the right features that provides a killer foundation.

If you haven't done so already, please review the comments from other Punchline users here on Talkbass:

Get yourself one of these before they're gone.

No you can’t ! UNLESS you modify it !
Which I did ! As much as I love my 2 Wayne jones 2x10 powered cabinets , I sometimes like to use a bass with flatwound strings and a totally tube amp (orange ad200 for example). So my tech added an input jack with neutrik and 1/4 capabilities so that I could use the cabinets with different amplifiers . That will probably void the warranty but I don’t care ! The modification was a real success ! I can also daisy chain another cabinet if I want to …. Killer !
I can send you a picture of you want

That sounds like a good idea, but if someone made the mistake of powering the active cab while another amp was connected, that would probably be very bad?

May be so ! But I’m not sure … but that can happen with many things! Like plugging speakers that are 4 ohms into an 8 ohm amplifier ! So just be careful . I have a huge collection of rack bass preamps (solid state and tube) so having a powered cabinet like the Wayne jones is like having 20 different amplifiers ! I love to have that option !

Yes. I’d probably put a warning notice on the back of the cab, not sure that would stop the idiot roadie that fried a Marshall head by turning it on without a speaker connected!

No need for now, but thank you!

Modified cabinets with incorrect labeling are a significant cause of unintentional amp issues. I see it fairly often.

A slight re-engineering would enable this. A power switch with more poles could be wired to disconnect the internal amp's output when the amp is turned off and allow for the Speakon to act as a speaker level input rather than an Extension Cab output as long as it's wired parallel to the internal speakers. That probably wouldn't satisfy safety regulations completely without another safeguard to prevent the internal amp from being tuned on while the Speakon is still connected to an outboard head. A little common sense and I see this being done without having to chop things up.

Absolutely won’t comply with safety regulations, and for very good reasons. Way more complicated than it appears when you don’t know how it’s supposed to work.

I knew you were going to ding me on that Andy. I was just spitballin'.
I'm sure GR could find a way to implement something to effect an external head option if they wanted to. The ACT concept is intriguing, but I'd like to be able to use an alternate if that amp goes down.
I'm still in love with your Shuttles man, but COPD is wearing me down to the point that I need to go even lighter. Up until a couple of years ago I would not have thought that possible.

I did it in a couple of Wayne jones powered cabinets I have ! It’s doable and it was not that complicated; the problem with the GR is the graphite cabinet and the Little space available on the control plate ; but I have been using the Wayne jones and it works great as a Powered cabinet OR as a normal cabinet with different amplifiers.
