New Head: Valkyrie from Baer Amps... Thoughts?

Hey Roger. Are you using that stock 6" faital driver? It looks great for bass but, since your oem 12" is alittle more efficient than the stock eminence, how is the 6" going to keep up. I think thats it rated around 95db. Im still waiting for a release date on the head. Can't wait.

From my experience with the Faital and the stock LF driver, it will be zero issue. While the Faital is not as in your face and high SPL as the 18Sound, it still has MUCH higher output than a woofer. It won't need to be padded down much like the 18Sound, but it works great (i.e., without any padding, that Faital and the stock 3012LF in the LDS cabs I've tested sounds balanced with the attenuator set at about noon... so it still has plenty of room left for Roger's more efficient version of that speaker IMO).

I love the sound of this mid driver!!!!! As Roger posted a while back on this thread, it's a nice compromise between a tweeter and some other mid drivers like the 18Sound. Obviously more mid content than a tweeter, but also a more extended high end and a little bit of a dip in the 'gank' area versus others I've heard.

honest to god, i will never buy another cab that has a piezo tweeter, unless there's at least 4 of them in a vertical array. johnny april of staind once described them as crunching a potato chip bag, and i agree.

they should go to the same audio hell as wall warts...banished for all time!

Cheers,
Cameron

I was able to check out the new 1x12 box in a very controlled environment. The articulation was great. A/b'ing it with my Epi UL112, the sound hole in the mids was evident, and the sound from the mids up was much thinner. By extracting mids on the amp I got a great slap sound. HOWEVER!!!!!
Before I give "the" opinion, I want to use it in the real world on a few gigs. And I want to use it real bad, and I want to use it NOW! I think I'm gonna really like this one.

Hey Kringle,
Yes we are using the Faital mid. I'm sure B String will back this up, as he A/B'd the ML112 with the different mids, but the cab as a whole sounds better with the Faital mid. These drivers balance really well together. So much so, that an L-pad is totally unnecessary on this cab. The Faital also has a little dip in response between 1.5K to 3.5K that works well to, as Ken puts it, get rid of the "gank" a bit. You really do get a tweeter-like top end out of this driver, plus it sounds really great with tubes. Your'e now hearing all those upper harmonics and distortion through a paper driver instead of a tweeter, which I greatly prefer. If you want a little more "in your face" mids, then all it takes is a slight boost of the amps EQ around 3K to make the cab much more aggressive sounding.

FYI, our woofer is not a LF with higher sensitivity. The LF is a low end monster but doesn't quite have the midrange presence that I like to hear from a live bass rig. Our engineers at Eminence worked really hard to come up with a driver that gives good low end power handling capability along with the midrange character I was after.

I like the development put into that 12" woofer. I've had reflex enclosures with both the 3012LF and 3012HO and thought that a driver somewhere in between with more mid presence than the LF but more low end authority than the HO would be ideal. It sounds like you've done just that. My GAS list is actually very short but the ML212 is on it. I'd love to A/B this against my Genz Benz Uber 212.

Apologies if you've answered this already Roger, but what's the crossover point between the woofer and Faital midrange driver?

MM

That sounds like a good x-over point. The woofer is still seeing a bit of midrange which just sounds better with bass. I tried out that faital mid in my 4x10, 1x6 cab over the weekend and it is very seemless from top to bottom. It didn't quite have the sensitivity needed to keep up with the four 10's so I put the 18sound back in. But, with the single 12, Im sure that it is a perfect match. That being said, Im most interested in the head. By x-mas Im hoping to have my custom stambaugh and baer head. :hyper:

Roger, can you update us on your current thinking about release dates?

Thanks, Matt

Hey guys, sorry it's been so long for the response. Without getting too long winded, there have been some considerable delays in getting the amp ready for production. This is a really tough economy to start a venture like this and for many reasons, progress has not been as fast as we had planned. We also had the opportunity to try out a new power section that sounded very promising and could reduce the overall cost of the amplifier, so I thought it was worth the delay to explore it further. At the moment, we've solved most of the pressing issues and we are currently building the final production prototypes. Unfortunately, it's just not possible to nail down a release date at the moment, but I should have a better grasp on when the amps will be available in a few months. We do expect to have the final production ready prototypes at NAMM and we should be very close to having a release date set at that point. Bottom line is, we are working on getting the amps ready for sale as fast as we can.

I do want to pass along some information for those interested in the cabinets. We have spent a lot of time and effort trying to reduce the cost of the poly urea coating on the cabinets but, between the material itself and the equipment needed to apply it to the cabinets, it is just a very expensive material to work with. While I firmly believe it is a superior coating, it does drive the cost of the cabinets up considerably. And the bigger the cabs get, the more expensive that coating becomes. Doing the poly on a cab the size of an 810 cab would drive the cost of that cab up over $200 higher than that of a carpet covering. We understand money is tight for everyone right now, so in the interest making the cabinets as affordable as possible, we have decided to go with a carpet covering for the cabs as the standard finish. I know the Tolex vs. Carpet debate is as old as time itself, but while I love the look of Tolex when it is brand new, I feel that the carpet is a much more durable covering in the long run. Also, because the poplar plywood we use is considerably softer than the heavier baltic birch ply, a Tolex covered cabinet would take a beating even faster than normal. We will have a high quality, non-padded Cordura nylon cover that should protect the carpet quite nicely and be less expensive and less bulky than a padded cover.

I really do appreciate the continued interest in the gear and for those that have been waiting for our gear to become available, I sincerely apologize for the delays. There has been so much more to this endeavor than we ever imagined and I hope you understand we are taking the time to do this right and bring the best product we possibly can to market.

Peace

I first noticed Roger Baer's work while looking at pictures of Nordstrand basses from NAMM '10 (Roger and Carey shared a booth), and since then, I've been eagerly awaiting the completion of Roger's website to get more info. Well, the website is up, and his new amp looks pretty cool!

http://www.baeramps.com/amps.html

400/700/900W into 8/4/2 ohms, two-band parametric mids, solid-state preamp with a blendable tube... nice specs on paper at least. I love my TF750, and the Valkyrie seems to be in the same vein in terms of size and performance.

Did any of you who were at NAMM get a chance to hear it? Thoughts? Bowlus, where are you? I've emailed Roger for pricing and timeline to availability (quoted on the website as Summer '10).

Additionally, Roger's got an 8-ohm 112 and a 4-ohm 212 in the works too; although I'm more interested in the Valkyrie, if anyone's got opinions on those, I'd welcome that as well.

I REALLY dislike the looks of this.
Maybe it sounds good though.
