Ok...I spent some time with Roger and his newest amp and
speaker box incarnations. Here are some quick opinions.
We did a good amount of listening with a drummer playing.
The reasons are obvious.
Roger has simplified his amp just a little from the last time I
played through it. I like it. The color scheme and lay out make
the controls easy to see on stage. Any little buttons have a
light with them, so you know its on. Lots of power! Oh...
did I say lots of power, I meant lots of power! My Shuttle 9.0
has a good amount of juice, but this is different. Unlike most
(maybe all) of the micro heads, amps like this or the Mesa's,
have a certain heft or weight to the sound the lightweights
just don't seem to have. At the same volume as my 9.0, and
eq'd to sound similar, Roger's amp has more of that "push".
Even at lower volume.
I preferred the solid state sound to the tube circuitry, but
that's just me. Either circuitry is just a push button away.
Now the Box...
I brought my Epi UL112 S-1, along as a reference box since I
know what it can do. I also brought the Shuttle 9.0.
Roger newest version of the box has a single 12in and a 6 in
mid driver and a front port. This is just about the opposite end
of the tonal spectrum from my UL112, and made one thing
abundantly clear. For those of us who sometimes have to play
quietly as well as loud, THIS BOX ROCKS!
We realized that many of the boxes sold have speakers and a
horn. As you play softer, the speaker (s) move less and push
less. This leaves you with hearing most of your sound through
a horn or tweeter. Very thin and wimpy. The mid driver gave
body to the sound at the lowest volume. Maybe even better
than my Berg AE210 at the lower volumes. As a result of this,
the mids are more "in your face" than a speaker & horn box.
Actually, its more the box hasn't got a hole in the upper mids
many speaker/horn boxes have.
Roger's box didn't go as low or as high as the UL112, but the
lows were much stronger, and with the great eq on the head,
I could ease the upper mids back just a touch, which brought
out the highs and sweetened up the sound. With a little eq it
kind of killed the UL112. OOOF!... There goes my G.A.S!
The bottom line is: This 40lb, 1x12, 1x6, front ported speaker
box, and 20lb, powerful head with very complete and simple
tone controls, can handle anything from a quiet pit gig or your
softest volume needs to volumes equal to the loudest single
12 boxes out there. It sounded great with both my Fender
American Deluxe J V and a Ken Lawrence Associate 5.
I think Roger Baer is going to make some major noise with this
speaker box and amp. This gear is going to work well for a lot
of different types players.
