New iPhone 4 hardware

This thread is about the new phone itself moreso than the os 4.0 so I started a new convo.

Jobs introduced the new phone today. Sounds like an incredible display 326ppi 800:1 contrast ratio. He claims it's better than any OLED screen front and back are glass as previously leaked. Dual mics with one for noise-canceling. Dual cameras. 5mp still camera. Macrumors claimed sample pics were incredible. Records video in 720p and includes an iPhone version of iMovie for editing on the phone. It can do titling and transitions. Works in the timeline view and you can add any song from iPod as a soundtrack.

The phone has a gyroscope built in. A4 processor as previously leaked. Claimed 40% more battery life. Videoconferencing will be available intially over wifi only. They are submitting their videoconferencing format to be approved as an open standard. There is a builtin gyroscope in the phone. This should allow for some crazy apps when combined with compass and accelerometer. Interested to see it integrated with augmented reality apps.

Phone is available in black or white on June 24th in the US
only. Other countries to be added in July and September. $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB. AT&T has agreed to allow up to 6 months early renewal with subsidized phone.

I was mistaken about it only being available in US on 6/24. According to Macrumors.com:

The new iPhone 4 model will go on sale on June 24 in the U.S., France, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom. In the U.S., it will cost $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB model with a new 2-year contract. iPhone 4 will be available in 88 countries by the end of September.

...Jobs ran into a little hiccup during his demo when Web pages on the spiffy new iPhone 4 refused to load. An error pop-up that read "could not activate cellular network" provoked a knowing titter from the audience. Jobs asked audience members to turn off their Wi-Fi and even fished for suggestions, prompting one smart aleck to shout out, "Verizon!"

It seems to me that if Verizon ever gets the iPhone, they will dominate the industry. I suspect that AT&T is shelling out a huge stack of cash to keep the iPhone exclusive.

When is it available in Canada? My blackberry is dying more and more every day (battery lasts about 7 hours on a full charge right now) and I have been holding out for several months already for this new iPhone, and this thing just looks incredible.

Same here. I was more stoked about the hardware updates than the software today. The near HD display and video in 720 could really put a hurt on the market for the Flip-style cameras.

The rumors have been hot lately that Verizon is going to get it by the end of the year and that the CDMA version will be made by Pegatron instead of Foxconn.

Who knows for sure. I'll stay with AT&T either way (reluctantly) because I get a full signal from AT&T at our land in the country but I barely get anything out there from Verizon.

I'm ready to plunk down my dough on a preorder. I have a 3GS, but this update is too sweet to wait it out. i just wish I could get a larger capacity than 32 gigs.

The phone looks real cool... that screen is amazing! I am an Android OS fanboy and played with a coworker's new EVO today which is also REALLY sweet! I have a twinge of phone GAS for that one (but my Moment is still doing all I want, so the GAS is passing).

My only concern with the iPhone / AT&T partnership is the changes to the data plans... my billing cycle closes tomorrow and I have 7.5GB of transfer logged so far according to my Sprint account page. No way a 2GB per month data plan could make the new iPhone even remotely useful to me.

Did you see that AT&T is allowing people to upgrade with subsidized prices up to 6 months before their contract dates are up? You should be able to upgrade as soon as it's out.
