I'm going to have a pickguard custom made from figured walnut (matching ramp) to cover the redesigned truss rod cover. But that's not for a few months.... It looks fine the way it is. It sounds incredible. Tell me what you think.

I'm not so good with my recording technique, but I might have some live video soon. I'll work on it, but it's kind of hard. I will tell you that this bass has a variety of available tones. It has a bit of an open sound due to the semi-hollow body, but it's very warm and resonant. The neck pickup has a tone reminiscent of a P-bass or a huge humbucker. The bridge pickup has a MM tone, really cutting. The piezos have brilliant high end and huge lows without sounding clacky--I'll put the Graph Techs up against the RMCs (which I have in my other bass)....I think I like the bridge a little better overall with the Graph Techs due to a tighter fitting saddle, but the RMCs are great too. The East pre sounds phenomenal. Lots of people gripe that the East pres are too colored, so I had John leave out the preshape, which I can later bring in if I like with some jumper wires. The pre has a treble roll off for the piezos and an on/off for the mid stack, which is way cool. John East preamps rock! The pre is REALLY hot, so I have to be careful not to clip the signal. Anyway, I will try to get some sound clips up eventually. I'll probably post about this bass in other threads when an opportunity presents itself. Visually everything is great except the truss rod cover and the inlays on 12 and 24, which I actually wanted in a different location. The inlays are very minor, and I'll have a nice figured walnut pickguard custom made in the near future to conceal the truss rod cover.

is the piezo by itself incredibly loud (tremendous output)?

Recall vividly the first bass Mike built of this model. He also took it that year to NAMM. Was a bolt-on and still is one of the best sounding/feeling/playing fretless basses i`ve ever played, period.
Mike is top-shelf, builds amazing instruments.
I do recall his first 6-string he built also, that too was amazing.

That was a simple miscommunication. It's not that big of a deal. Underneath is mostly solid wood from the neck-thru. I'm going to eventually get my local tech (who's a great luthier as well) to build a custom pickguard of walnut for the bass to conceal the truss rod cover and give it more of a vintage look. Think of the MTD truss rod covers, this one is not that much bigger now. I agree it's the worst part of the bass, but it's a pretty minor thing, and at least I got the slapping room I need. I'll post pics when I get the pickguard on it this summer. First, I'm going to wait to get my Linc back.
Yes, but I'm going to back the gain down with the trimpot on the piezo board. The electronics are from John East and sound huge. I'm going to match the levels between the mags and piezos a little better.
