Hi, I'm Rick. I think I came across TB while doing a Yahoo search, and I'm really glad I checked it out. I started playing when my parents bought me my first bass when I was 12. Gave it up after it burned in a house fire when I was 14. Saved up for another one at 18 (a Ric 4001). Got frustrated with all the band B.S. when I was 23 and sold it. Got married and a few years later while at my friends gig my wife looked at me and said "You still want to play don't you." " Why don't you buy some gear and join a band?". Some wives are really great. That was when I was 38 and I've been with a band for 2 years and having a great time. Nice to meet you all:D

Hey everyone what's up, my name is Dave. I've been cruisin around here for a couple of months, and I think this is such an awesome website! I've been playing for 18 years...mostly rock but also some blues, R&B, and jazz. Like many people around here, I too have GAS and it's really been acting up lately. In the past 6 months or so I have bought two Sadowskys (a 4 and a 5, both ash/maple 21-fret, quilted tops), an Aguilar db750, an Eden 210XLT (to go with my 410XLT), and a Boss GT-6B. Yeah, it's outta control right now. Like Nino, I too have the Sadowsky bug...perhaps there may be a fretless in my future (or maybe a vintage model). Anyway, thanks for the welcome JT...nice to meet you all, this site is a great resource...I've already gotten a lot out of it in two short months!

Al, the best thing for you to do is look around in the Strings Forum. There should be some good suggestions there. If you don't see anything particularly helpful, start your own thread in Strings asking this question.

I really want to become a supporting member, but at 17, its hard for me to have any real control over money.

I know its not a lot of money (like $2?) but I dont have a credit card or anything like that thats free to use. (I could imagine the GAS relief if i did have one though
:D )

I really wanted one of those, but I kinda suck at bass (i.e. I spend more time on Talkbass.com than I do practicing bass =) ) Anyway, you guys have already been a ton of help. been playing about 10 years or so, love metal/rock/funk. trying to get something rolling now, for the first time in years.

currently working on 2nd bachelors degree in human services counseling, 'cause its fascinating, and 'cause my first was in philosophy and isn't worth the paper its printed on.

i work my almost dream job, if only it paid a little (just a little.) i'm a mental health counselor for a five county catchment area. i teach behavioral, social, vocational and independent living skills to mentally retarted/mentally ill patients in a community treatment facility. i'm at work right now.

i'd say my most passionate pursuit is first my work, its cool ministering to those in need, and i really value the quality of the relationships i've formed here; i sleep really well at night, followed by music.

i play guitar as well as bass, though not quite as well. still, i'm passable, got a phat jackson performer. bass-wise, i just replenished the losses i've suffered, gear wise, over the past few years. in the last six months i've ebayed away: swr big bertha, swr sm-500, 6 string spector. got an old spector, neck through w/ spector pickups that i'd really love to know about. anybody know what model(s) had the spector pups?

nice ta meetcha.

Fairly new...I've been readin' and watchin'....My name is Mark and I'm living in Korea stationed @ Osan AB. Used to work on C-141s, C-130s, and now I work on the biggest POS in the USAF inventory; the F-16 acft. What a hunk of junk.....Oh, I LOVE to play the bass...See ya!:mad:

Hi everyone, I'm George ...

I've been playing the bass for a whole five days now ... and I still suck :-)
I've been wanting to play for a while now, but I couldn't really afford to buy a bass.
But then I saw this really cheap (200 Euro's, about 180$) and very cool looking Jazzbass copy from Stagg, and it sounded pretty decent too.
I also like the feel of a Jazzbass because of the thin neck. (easier to play, I have small hands)
So I bought the damn thing and I haven't regretted my decision for one second !
My bankacount and fingertips probably don't agree with me on this one, but I'm having way too much fun to care :-)

Every once in a while, TalkBass gets so many new faces that the old regulars have a hard time keeping up with who's who.

So, if you're new to TB, please post a little bit about yourself, how long you've been playing, what kind of music you play, what are your influences, how you found TalkBass, etc. Don't worry, they won't bite. ;)

Since I still get the occasional PM from befuddled old regulars who didn't get the memo (not that there was a memo) My name used to be Big Wheel and I play in a band called Brittany Shane & the Nooners. We play folk-rock with a bit of funkyness thrown in, courtesy of yours truly. I've been a big James Jemerson ripoff since 1992, although I pretty much try to incorporate eveything coll I hear other bassists do, within reason, of course.

Hey everyone, i'm new to bass, I've been playing now for 2 months and have been searching the forums and tabs here for info and tips and finally decided to regester. I just wanted to introduce myself and maybe ask a question or 2.

I'm from Oregon, USA and i'm 17. I first started playing around september 2nd when i was looking at my dad's Fender "Stu Hamm" Urge hanging on the wall, i looked up Stu Hamm and watched a clip of him doing a solo, well not even half-way through the clip i found myself asking my dad to teach me bass. my dad being an awesome guitarist and somewhat of a bassist was thrilled, he gave me that Fender and bought me a Peavey TKO 115 amp and ever since i've been hooked.

of course it'll be some time to get myself playing like Stu hamm, i still consider myself a competitant beginner. I recently started slapping a poping songs like "brick house" - commodores, my friend's all agree that it's impressive, and i think it's the funnest way to play. favorite song right now would have to be "A certain shade of green" - Incubus.

To open up, i'd like to ask a few questions.
-Should i be learning 4 string or 5 string? (my dad is thinking of getting me a Squire 5 string) and, how much harder is it to slap and pop, etc on a 5 string rather then a 4?
-The amp i have wieghs 85 pounds, shakes the crap out of my house and sounds awesome, but i am thinking of getting something more portable like a SWR Workingmans 12, anybody have any opinions on that or other similar sized amps?
