Hello there and welcome to Talkbass.

I'm not an expert slap player (I stopped using it in 88). Personally a 4 is easier to slap on but you can do anything you want with a little effort.

What bass do you want? Do you need the low range? Will you be playing with keyboardists who love Eb?

Get the type of bass that you want and dont let anyone sway you. My parentswere anti learning bass so look after that dad of yours.

Overall, learning on either a 4 or a 5 is fine. (If you learn on the 5, though, it's still useful to be able get around on a 4 without the alternate fingering/shifting possibilities).

Do you really need to buy another amp? The one you have is more than adequate for practicing around the house, so unless it's really a problem to transport it (and do you need to really travel with it much yet?), I wouldn't worry about another one yet. If you do, though, please mail me your TKO. :)

Welcome to Talkbass, and enjoy your stay. Nice to see another youngish guy on the boards ;)

Glad you like Incubus, thats a very fun song to play :). As for the choice of a 4 or a 5, the choice is really yours, although there are alot of people around here that would say its better to learn the basics on a 4 (and I agree). It is somewhat more challenging to slap on a 5, because you have to make your thumb movements more accurate, so you dont hit the low B when your trying to hit the E. As for popping, you only really have to pop on the D and G strings, to the extra low string doesnt really pose any threat.

I own the same amp as you, and yes, I agree 110%, it is a heavy beast. I know next to nothing about amps, but the Workingmans 12 wont be as powerful as your TKO115.

Other than that, welcome to Talkbass, and enjoy your stay!! :D :)

I guess i will just have to really try the 5 vs a 4 string, i would like the 5 string so that i can play Staind and maybe some nickleback, but i was just worried that i wouldn't be able to slap it as well as the 4... of course, there's always the 3rd choice, get both... the bass i have now sounds awesome, i've compared it to others i've testing in guitar center/musician's friend and i cant find it's equal (although it may just be the settings i used, you need to be a rocket scientist to use EQs, Active electronics, and tone controls)

as for the amp, i love the amp, which makes me want to keep it, unfortunately, it wont fit in my little celica :( thats why i was thinking of workingmans 12, when i get good enough to play gig's etc, i can upgrade.... i just wanted an opinion on that particular amp in comparison to similarly sized ones, i've heard it and it sounds good, i just wanted to make sure there wasn't something better for the price (300+ bucks)

scottos150: i'm a senior at North, you got AIM or anything? i haven't met very many people that play bass my age around here, or any instrument for that matter, besides a few guitar players (like my brother)

I'm afraid you won't find anything remotely as good as the Urge is higher-end Fender. If you really feel the need for the fifth string, get the Squier(or even better, Yamaha BB605) but don't loose the Urge.

Well - the Search feature on TB is very easy to use and I explained why - as somebody was asking about why Fieldy is associated with strange capitalisation - here is the evidence!

Do you have to say everything twice around here before people get it?

Hey everyone, I'm Justin and I'm new... (my second post).

I've just been inspired to start playing something again by buying my dad an old Silvertone amp. I chose bass this time... Not really sure why. Some kind of mystique? Oh well. I played clarinet in jr. high, gu+tar and sang in high school (both in a garage band and in school choir) and just kinda stopped after college...

Well, now I'm 30 and it's time to do something cool again. Ordered a Samick P/J and a little Behringer amp, we'll see how it progresses from there.

Oh yeah, I'm in the suburbs of Chicago.

Hey fellow bass players. I am jawzzz. I have been playing bass for almost two years now. Before that I played guitar off and on for about ten years. I swiched to bass cause I relized how much more fun it is and cause I don't have the "i am greater than thou" attitude that most guitarists have.;) I love this site, it has helped my gain confidence in my playing ability and taught me alot about playing bass. :bassist:

Bruce,

you need a hobby,

Hi, I'm Thor
I'm a bass playing alcoholic bassaholic.
My wife considers me allegedly a menace to
normal society, family values, and, since she
got righteous with the Lutherans, a guy who has nothing but sex, drugs, booze and sex on the mind. [ Nice new Avatar, Page3.com from 1977] By the way, all you Mainers, look out for that Lutheran coffee, it's not watered down enough.

I promise not to drink too much today, but my bass is giving funny signals, Thor, come here, I want you... Thor ....

Talkbass has had a beneficial effect on my life, I actually think I am talking to someone when i aM
