New mesa subway amps and cabs!

Same here, but with MDR 7506s. I still have 2 pairs of them, one for my practice rig. Both have to be close to 20 years old. I’ve even kept the original headphone 1/8” adapter!

Never experienced anything like what the other fellow did. That’s weird.

But I’m glad he solved his issue, whatever the solution.

I use the SONY 7509 which is a bigger version in term of low frequencies, I think it was design primaly for tecno music, very sturdy.

+1, Love my 7509's, on my 3rd set of earcups on them and they sound fantastic.

I also still love my HD 580's, they still sound great after all these years. My 650's sound better but the 580's are the most comfortable cans I've ever owned. I practice nightly with the WD and the 580's when everyone else is in bed.

Same as me, another very good one is the pair that came with a Presonus audio FireWire interface that look very similar to the AKG 242 but I can't tell who is made it.

Not meant to be a rant, but I picked up the Mesa D800 and 2x15 Subway cab due to the hype here. Spent a pretty penny buying new (especially the cab). Had a great experience with my last amp, which was a Mesa Walkabout, so I assumed I'd dig the D800. Boy was I wrong. It lacks character. Sounds like my bass plugged into a PA.

The Walkabout is a fairly heavily voiced amp, what cabinet were you using with it?

You might try your Walkabout with the Subway 215, that's a combination that was favored by those who preferred a colored amp.

So in your opinion, can the Subway 2x15 cab handle a very colored all-tube amp like an SVT or Super Bassman? Was looking to upgrade from my Walkabout and try something new, which is why I got the D800 and 2x15 in the first place. If I can keep the cab, that'd be great because it's light and fits in a taxi.

Of course. There are players here on TB using the 115 and 215 (or 2 x 115's) with both of those amps.

Bass is like tofu, it taste the flavour of what you cook with.

I tried a D800 and found it wasn’t quite what I was after so I sold it and bought a WD800. Totally different beast - lots of character, harmonics, and voicing options. I’ve been very pleased with it and I know others have used it and liked it with the SW215 cab.

I haven’t played one, but from this forum, demos and owning a D800 it seems like you might prefer the WD800.

I use the D800/215 combo - the 215 is amazing... many find class D stuff lacking (I did having had an SVT + 8x10). Never used to own a pedal but after going 'lightweight', now get my tone from them, primarily a VT Bass, OD, compression (D800 set almost flat). My D800/215 rig sounds INCREDIBLE with a bit of tube emulation/eq up front. That's what works for me... powerful, and I can haul it all in 1 trip.

If you choose to ditch the heavy tube amp path, take the "taxi" approach, try a sansamp, VT bass, Darkglass, etc.

Thanks so much for the suggestion! I heard someone on talkbass say that the sansamp didn't play well with the d800. I definitely love that preamp! I use a dark glass for dirt right now, but it is more djent than tube. I want that tube tone. Are you using the VT or BDDI for your emulation most?

I use the VT Bass DI on my board for emulation 100% (never had a BDDI), and also have a non-DI VT pedal in my gig bag if I don't want to use entire pedal board. I have an MXR-M77 and/or M85 in front of the VTBASSDI for dirt. I also have an MXR-M80 DI/preamp that sounds pretty awesome and tubey (color switch engaged) through the D800. Either should give you what your missing.
