What’s a digital power amp?

Not sure, but I guess there are some in military ships and planes, satellites and space probes to amplify that digital signal home.

A digital TV or radio broadcast doesn’t transmit a series of ones zeros over the air like you have in a data stream. The programming is digital throughout the studio as you would expect, but the signal going to the transmitter is encoded so it can modulate carriers. It’s somewhat like using an old modem to transmit digital information on an analog telephone line. You still get modulated carries out of the transmitter like you did with analog TV, they are just modulated in a way that represents the digital programming and can be recovered at the receiver which converts the signals back to the digital video and audio formats that we all know and love.

Data streams aren’t ones and zeroes either. They’re high voltage / low voltage with copper or light on/off in the case of fiber.

Thanks to Chef, it has a little more high end transparency than the original Walkabout. We have heard a few players wish for a little more, Chef was the most persuasive

How would this compare to the D800 in the overall? Too broad a question?

Pretty broad question. Lots of small differences that add up to both tonal and textural differences.

For those of us unable to hear both amps, a little detail on the differences would be helpful for making a purchasing decision. I'm guessing that the WD-800 has more harmonic distortion, perhaps mostly 2nd harmonic, along with different general EQ voicing and perhaps a somewhat more compressed or "squishy" dynamic response due to the tube preamp. However, that's just the hunch of someone who hasn't directly compared them....

Oh, my sincere apology. Coming from a city that sported one of the first all female rock bands signed to a major label (Fanny), of course with a female bass player (Jean Millington), and having worked with she and her sister for years, I would never disrespect your accomplishments.

I was recently at June's benefit. The Millington sisters and I are all Filipina. Jean had a stroke some time ago, and the benefit was held for her in Greenfield, MA.

I do a lot of work with young women who have studied at IMA with the Millington sisters. They are a national treasure.

Cool, small world! iMA is a great organization, I worked with many of their friends and fellow clinicians during my pro audio days, in the heyday of women's music.

Their younger brother Dave (Scott) and I worked together for many years and we are still good friends of the family. We're from the same town in CA (post Philippines of course). Many in their extended family play amps I designed!

While that’s true, it also has waaaaay more power than the old WA; and if one were to boost lower eq bands, add an active bass, and really dig in on some note with fingers or a pick, the new amp could be problematic in the old combo.

I don't boost the lows when using the combo. I run it flat with slight treble boost. I run my bass flat, too, and I'm pretty conservative with my pedal setup.

I don't expect the Scout 12 to cover what I used to cover with my Trace Elliot 4x12. I just would like the flexibility of using the WD-800 in that cab for smaller gigs, as well as with bigger cabs for bigger gigs.

I won’t be selling my Walkabout heads..the original classic.
But I did see a few posts selling gear to finance the new Walkabout..used market yields tremendous value..

Right? The Walkabout is 13 lbs. with a 300 W into 4 Ω Class AB output section. It's an awesome amp. My first Trace Elliot was a Series 6 AH200 (200 W into 4 Ω), and it rocked into two big cab 1x15s.

Also, the WD-800 is larger and a little bit heavier than the D-800/D-800+ so this alone may factor into a player's decision...

You could stack a Walkabout, a WD-800, a D-800+, and a D800, and it would still be lighter and smaller than my Trace Elliot V-Type tube head.

A local bassist I know, Dave Rountree with The Fantastic Partnerz, is using either a D-800 or D-800+ with two Subway 1x12s. Sounds great, to me, but his style is a lot different than mine, at least, as it is when I'm playing in a rock band. I dig in when I play, he's a much more refined player, at least with this band.

Just read through 498 messages in this thread and found a few somewhat related comments from Al Kraft and none at all from Chef regarding the query. Perhaps their observations are located elsewhere? Link? Further, I think end users would benefit more from an explanation of the relative differences from the designer.

It doesn't exist. Many people think class D amps stands for digital. But that's a total BS, it's just a class of amplifier
