New Metallica Song " My Apocalypse"

I disagree with Qvist. Metallica's early thrash was tightly controlled, melodic, rhythmically challenging and menacing. This song is none of those. It smacks more of waterered down hardcore punk than thrash metal.

To paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen, I know thrash metal, I play thrash metal, this sir, is not thrash metal.

It's obvious they're totally out of ideas, attempting to rehash old quality works, and it's not happening. It sounds cheesy. Especially the vocals. There is nothing metal about James or Lars anymore.

Seriously, please stop. Save some face while it's still possible.

no, no i compeltely disagree. i am a very big metallica fan, i love their old stuff. i think this song is terrible. they are trying to sound like slayer, with gore-descriptive lyrics. it just comes off as chessy to me. hetfield is a chameleon as far as singing goes- one song its a soft ballad, now hes trying to sound agressive. there is nothing wrong with that at all, but he does so terribly. i hate the riffs, i hate the lack of an identifiable song structure, **** i cant identify the chorus due to no vocal hooks. it sounds terrible. i am dissapointed. this is not thrash metal, and if it is, its REALLY BAD thrash metal.

that is to say that i disagree with those who call this a good song.

no, they are just catering to what they think is popular. this sounds like they are TRYING to be slayer. the lyrics and vocal style are SO DIFFERENT from anyhting they have done in a LOOOONG time. but its in NO WAY a comeback to any of their good albums. this is terrible.

Huh???

Kill em All sounded pretty raw to me and Ride the Lightning to a lesser extent and I think they both sounded great.

Those albums had RAW production, but the timing and parts we dead on. The songs also told stories and had feeling.

I mean RAW as in sloppy. This is poorly mastered sloppy recording. Better than many other bands trying to do this, but not Metallica worthy.

These songs I have heard sound thrown together, the individuals parts are sloppy, the mixing is atrocious, and the recording is very robotic and doesn't have a good feel to it.

With that being said, the masses will eat this up anyway. Just like Romy and Michelles High School Reunion made a ton of money even though it was entertainment garbage.

I like that all 3 songs released thus far are quite different in structure. I've only heard this one once so I can't really say much about it. It's neat that they are doing some thrash songs, and I like that this tune was more to the point. But no riffs really grabbed me on the first listen.

Anyone hear the distorted crap on these things? Just grabbed the two singles off Itunes and it sounds just like the mastering was pushed to high and is distorting a bit. Very annoying. If the whole album is mastered like this....I won't be buying it. Sounds like the stream from metallica.com has the same crap in it.

i think its the best out of the new 3, but that doesnt say much. i don't like how they are trying to sound like more agressive metal bands, trying to sound more 'brutal' because thats more popular. those lyrics and singing style sounded so forced. And then you have songs like 'The Day that never comes' and your just left with a confused feeling. i wouldnt call it a return to thrash, although some may. if thats your opinion, you need a lesson in thrash metal. also there was no real feeling of a song, it just felt like an endless endless riff pattern. kind of lame.

I have to admit, I found the subtle cookie monster vocals (maybe Rob is doing them) not quite fitting right under James voice.

I pretty much blame this all on the sad state of the music industry right now. It kind of reminds me of when the hair metal bands all started sounding the same and it took the whole metal genre down in flames.
I really can't name too many songs, let alone albums, that have come out in the past few years that has been worth actually buying. Even the latest Foo Fighters effort was just so-so and they are one of my favorite bands. I was really hoping for this new Metallica album to be quality throughout, although I do give them some credit for trying something different...again. It's like come on, Metallica is one of the bands that got me interested in becoming a musician. Is this the best they can come up with? There's just nothing to look forward to anymore.

sounds like Slayer???!......what are you talking about.. and also the overall producing is not as great as we would like it to sound like..and also i agree with fender..the days of Kill 'Em All were RAW and dead on..they were young, full of alcohol, and ready to rock..i guess they ARE running low on ideas and the overall cocnept of their sound..i guess..Eh.. i guess we have to wait and see until the FINAL cd is in our hands. on our computers to see how it is..i thought rick Rubin would completly change everything..well just have to see for now..

+1/2

i agree they need to throw in the towel, but it's far far too late to save any sort of face. their earlier works stand as testament to their inimitable place in metal history, but every turd they've laid since the black album has dragged them further and further away from the possibility of redemption. they've gone from being thrash-metal pioneers to a really heavy spice girls.

metallica is a mockery of a sham of an embarrassment. they're essentially Kiss, now.

edit: don't bother flaming, i'm busy listening to bands that are doing interesting things with their music
