New Metallica Song " My Apocalypse"

Even horrible song writers can get good production nowadays. Is Metallica really that horrible of a band now that they're beyond being producable? It's obnoxious.
But this is EXACTLY my point - others here and on other message boards are trying to pass the subjective off as objective, and the current consensus, for better or worse, among Metal fans is "Metallica sucks now." Some even have this mentality even BEFORE hearing the songs.
Some of the criticism - "riffs thrown together," "cheesy lyrics," "bad singing," - Metallica was getting criticized for this in 1982!!!! What changed?
Also, some of the more hilarious criticisms - "where's the scooped tone?" - are presented as if their opposites are somehow positives. (Midrange is a good thing people, and face it...Justice sounded like it was mixed through a bandpass filter over the 2-bus).
Bleh, the whole thing is highly subjective, which is why I won't waste my time any further. Like it, don't like it, then fine; the world will continue to spin on its axis.
But the absurd expectations, coupled with the bandwagon mentality, is head scratching.
Slayer's been recording the same album for the past decade!
Plus, "Staying true" is a euphemism for "never changing." I have more respect for a band that takes the chance of sucking, and occasionally fails (like Metallica) than Seasons in the Abyss part 6.
My Newt Gingrich analogy still stands.

The stuff I've heard so far sounds like when a band "tries" to write new songs, instead of letting songs naturally evolve into something cool. Know what I mean?
It's like "Hey let's take riff A and put it after riff C from that other song we started, then lets take riff B and play it double time." You are typically gonna end up with crap if you go that route.

The real problem is that it SOUNDS like Metallica was trying to make an album like their early stuff, and failed. You can always tell what trend metallica is following and failing at. During the Load/Reload era they were trying to rip off alternative/suthern rock because that was big in the late 90s. A few years back with St. Anger the hardcore/metalcore scene was taking off so they tried to rip off that stuff. Now 80s throwback metal is getting big so they're trying to sound like their first few albums again.
At some point they turned into a crappy corporate pop act and it's blatantly obvious that they are the Bud Light of metal... watered down and tasteless, but comfortable. If they wanna try to rip their old stuff off for the sake of trying to cash in on trends, then they better be ready for criticism.

I'd love if this was just some weird tease, where they release the rejected new songs, made a fake cd list and then when everybody buys the album everything was different and like REAL metallica.

I have heard three songs from Death Magnetic and I am reserving my opinion until the I hear the offical release.
Heard it. Not bad, but I prefer TDTNC.
Oh, hands down my favorite part of the song was the solo. Probably one of my favorite things I've heard Kirk Hammet do since about 1991.

yeah I feel the same,... the funniest part is they said it didn't feel 'right' to try and force their riffs etc, yet to me some of it does,... the original thrash they wrote were original good compositions, the stuff ive heard so far of the thrash style reminds me more of a band going ooo lets try and remember what we did back then as opposed to it coming naturally,... but to be honest I won't pass judgement till ive heard the whole album...
yeah exactly..FULL reviews obviously can't be put out without the album itself out in the first place!..maybe these are just the weakest songs we are hearing..September 12th will be judgement day...
As opposed to AC/DC, Sabbath, Aerosmith, Preist, etc....
Those guys, well some of them, will occasionally throw in something a little different, but for the most part stick to what they do, and do well.
I honestly have greater respect for a band that sticks to what they know, and do well, as opposed to following trends and failing. but thats just me.
Like I said before I'm one of the old school fans, and they will never live up to the original standard they set for themselves. IN MY EYES.
Actually the the more I hear it I like "The Day That Never Comes". The music sounds like In Justice..... influenced. The vocals are so so. I didn't expect Metallica to reclaim the glory of the old days. How many bands do? But it still is better than most of the new crap put out there. Again it sounds like poeple bashing Metallica because it's the cool "in thing to do". There will be a lot of closet fans who will be afraid to admit that they like it.
i am a metallica fan, that is i am obsessed with their first 4 albums. and i am not afraid to admit that i hate it. im not doing it because its cool, my friend is a megadeth guy and sticks it in my face constantly that they suck. the only people who enjoy bashing their new stuff are the people who never liked them becasue of their success or praise or w/e.
