Well, to each his own, but I don't think this song is as good as a single song off of Justice, let alone Dyer's Eve which is IMO far far superior to this song.

It's obvious they're totally out of ideas, attempting to rehash old quality works, and it's not happening. It sounds cheesy. Especially the vocals. There is nothing metal about James or Lars anymore.

Metallica WAS the best to me. With Newstead or Cliff there are few bands I'd rather listen to. But they've spit on their own legacy.

Could you name some bands that are doing interesting things with their music? Seriously, I am starved for good tunes. I've been looking for something heavy, I was hoping Metallica would fill that void for a while but.......nada.
The last band that I heard that I thought had some cool heavy stuff was "Brand New Sin," but the singer started getting to me.
Basically I just hate everything right now, Metallica didn't help it any either.

on the heavier side, Pelican and Clutch are doing it for me these days...check out Skatar as well, saw them in iceland not too long ago, they're not THAT heavy but they occasionally launch into some metal stuff, very eclectic outfit. outside that it's a lot of The Battles and Charlie Parker (i double on the giant violin)

I like this song and I like The Day That Never Comes and I hated St. Anger. I would love to see this album come out and be kickass and silence people who say Metallica have lost it. You just have to go see them live to see they haven't lost it.

+1 Also check out COC, The Sword, and High On Fire if you can. A bit more proggy but still kick-ass metal is Mastodon. Check out Blood Mountain. Oh, and Opeth as well.

What is this? I guarantee you that if they came up with an actual good song that did sound like what they did before they would still get bad criticism. People are just biased to the band and nothing the band does now will satisfy anybody no matter how hard they try.


Its a non issue of good vs bad songs anymore this is an issue of people hating new metallica.

Seriously, I don't get the hate. At their worst, Metallica are still better than 90% of the "metal" out there. Also, is "My Apocalypse" any different from anything that would have appeared on Ride the Lightning? Or Justice?

Let's take the game further - would "Through the never" sound out of place on the first few discs? Is "The Unforgiven" REALLY any different from, oh, "Fade to black?"

The whole bandwagon/consensus hatred of Metallica is very odd (especially given that they still sell out stadiums everywhere they go, but that's another story for another time). It seems as if their critics want to see them rewrite Master of Puppets, a ludicrously lofty standard, and express disappointment when the new material doesn't meet their narrow, nostalgic criteria.


Also puzzling is the belief - BASED ONLY ON HIS SOLOING PROWESS AND GEEZER-esque WAH STYLINGs - that Cliff Burton was a "better" bassist than Jason Newsted, even though soloing PERIOD is but one of the many aspects of bass playing. This is akin to saying that Japanese kid in the Youtube video, playing guitar at 360 BPM is "better" than Angus Young.

Also silly is blaming Newsted for "destroying" Metallica's sound when (as Some Kind of Monster proved) Ulrich and Hetfield are the ones in charge of the band's direction.

Metal fans are more conservative than Newt Gingrich buying the Collected Works of Leo Strauss at an Ayn Rand bookstore.

I like cyanide and the day that never comes, this one my apocalypse I can enjoy it but not like it, it sounds like Dyers Eve to me and I didn't like that song

plus, yeah most people want them to make a new album like the 3 grand (Killemall, Ride the lightning, master of puppets), cliff burton did make a difference, he had stage presence plus he created good basslines (although some of them were the same as the guitar).

Of all 3, Jason Newsted seemed like the worst player, technique-wise, but he still added a lot to metallica, the cookie monster voice, and some simple basslines that worked (There's not one single song in Black Album that I don't like), and I even like Load and Reload

I don't see Robert Trujillo doing much of an influence in their sound since hetfield and lars only care about what they think, and I think it would be nice (cyanide has a nice solo, but he should be heard more on the songs)

As far as the mastering goes Warner Bros issued a statement saying that it will not sound like that on the album. I guess there was some sort of mistake made on the db levels due to trying to rush it to radio. That being said... Im a huge Metallica fan and I like the "idea" of what they are doing.. The Day That Never Comes reminds me of Fade and Sanatarium a little bit, but Cyanide might have a good song in there somewhere between all the different riffs... My Apocalypse has a sort of Slayer feeling to it which I am digging. Lars is a great drummer, but I think he should spend a bit more time on the practice pads for sure. All this is just my humble opinon..

Ok, I had enough of this! I really can't get where does all the fuss come from.. The previous 2 songs I heard was really 3/10, where 10 being the highest Metallica standard. This song is maybe 4. Very ordinary and repeatitive, weak lyrics (one of the Metallica's strong suits I believe), not creative at all, too round guitar tones, do not have the usual Metallica agression, etc. I can really go on like this.

It's almost sounds like the new Metallica imprisoned themselves in a room, listened their old songs and tried to copy old Metallica. They did a bad job I must add. My criteria is simple, if this song was recorded by an unknown band, would someone sign them? Absolutely not! You guys are just excited about hearing 2-3 sec.s of old Metallica in a hopeless nostalgic dream. I sincerely believe "you" are biased, not "us".

Absolutely yes. First of all, where is the energy? Where is the complex rhythm arrangements? Where is the strong lyrics? Where is scooped tone?

Let's do that. Unforgiven and Fade to Black example is a bad one, because they are indeed really different songs They are as similar as "more than words" and "don't cry" But as I said, let's play your game and say "Fade to black" and "One". They obviously came from the same creative roots. The intro chords, the arrangement and the song concept is really similiar. But when I first listened One, eventhough I thought track 4 of the previous 2 albums are like copies of each others in an acceptable way, I still thought "One" was a good song. This is hard to describe really, because there is no way to describe the "good". The song has the quality the new ones do not.

I'll go ahead and throw my 2 cents in.....

This is WEAK, VERY WEAK. It literally sounds (in this one song) like they used rejected riffs from Justice, Black, and Load, and just randomly threw them together in order of how fast they are, regardless as to if they fit cohesively as a song.

I'm one of the jaded Old School fans, who have been listening to them since 83-84. THIS is NOT the Metallica I grew up with. plain and simple. It's these guys going through the motions and reaching for something in their past that is beyond them, WAY beyond.

I'm TERRIBLY disappointed in what they turned themselves into, The way I look at it, if Megadeth, Slayer, Testament, and Exodus, can STILL produce quality music and still remain true to their roots and art, why couldn't these guys? They are spoiled and soft, thats why. They have NOTHING left to prove and their music shows this glaringly.
