I prefer used - it's had time for the neck to settle in so there's less chance of warp or shrinkage in the wood, as well as possible tone changes, plus I prefer to save money where I can and don't really care about small dings and scratches, even on my Sadowsky. I take good care of my basses but I'd rather have one that plays well than looks like it is brand new. It's a bass, not a Mercedes.

Used- let somebody else eat the depreciation. The only time I buy new stuff is when it's on closeout or otherwise seriously discounted. That said, I'd make an exception for an SX if I was in the market for a cheap & cheerful axe, 'cause they're so damn cheap.

I bought my Squiers new because they are/were inexpensive. My higher-end (for me), I bought used. That works well for me. I would need to spend some quality time with a used Squier as it seems that they are (more) often not treated as well (IMHO) since they are cheap in the first place. My used USA and Japan Fenders came from loving homes and saved me quite a bit of coin.

I tend to have my instruments custom made.
So there is not really a second hand option there.

I am looking into getting a fender musicmaster bass at the moment, and that is gonna be 2nd hand as they are no longer being made.

Many of my basses are one-off, so there is no alternative but new. On the other hand, the used market has allowed me to buy and try many many basses and form an informed opinion regarding different aspects off basses. Thus, my vote goes to USED
