New Origin Effects DCX Bass

I have the compact. I don’t have a collection of high end preamps to compare, but @IvanBassist just did a Noble comparison here:

Noble had that perfect Tube tone but isn't in my price range man I would love that piece of kit. But for the price difference that gave me gas again for the BP-1 C all over again.

Another comparison I'd love to see would be the Full size BP-1 vs. Noble.
A near equal price point.

The difference is of course that the BassRig pedals are supposed to imitate the tone and feel of playing a real tube amp+cab. This is an imitation of a studio microphone preamp with no cab and no output tubes.
So who would’ve gone into the studio preamp and then into a tube amp? It would have been one or the other yeah? So why would I want to put this new pedal into a Bassrig?
Tone shaping I guess but not sure it’ll shape my tone before a Bassrig any more than my Barbershop drive or an eq tbh.
Like other have said though if it was a D.I I would get it

I’ll follow this thread though and hope I’m wrong and it turns into an essential piece of kit.
I want something that will do what my Fairfield Barbershop drive and DG B3K will do

I haven't tried the Barbershop but the DCX won't be anything like the B3K. Completely different in every way. At least if the DCX is even remotely close to a real 610. The 610 is a microphone preamp, designed for CLEAN amplification of mics. Sure it can be cranked into distortion and yes it's rather dark sounding (for a micpre) even though it was probably designed to be as transparent as the techology back then permitted. But TOTALLY different from the B3K.

Exactly. I don't understand the idea behind this product. Still, if it sounds great as a dirt pedal it might be worth the money but you can get a lot of other great dirt pedals at THAT price!

If it had a balanced output and I didn't already own a real 610 (with 50s/60s tubes) I might consider testing it but I don't even use my real 610 much for bass to be honest. I much prefer my 1073 for recording bass. The 610 gets a lot of use for other stuff though. Love it for Rhodes when going direct and the dark character can be pretty sweet for some vocals too.

Yeah I see what it is now.
Need the Distortion with blend of a B3k and also a pedal that does light drive like the Barbershop in 1 pedal really.
Still interested though with the tone shaping abilities to kick in and out for certain songs maybe

Yeah probably a use for it for someone but doesn’t look like I’m going to need it sadly.
What they need to do is make a really good bass drive.
Maybe even one with 2 channels Mild OD and More OD to get on the board.
Yeah anything over £160 for me has got to do its job very well and this is around £250 I think! But I guess that’s what you have to pay for quility that’s made in UK though

None of their pedals in this smaller form factor have XLR. Other than the 2 BassRigs, none of Origin Effects other pedals have an XLR DI either.
I'm cool with that. I always use my JDI after my various pedal pres. Y'know the JDI is always gonna work.
In any event, this thing sounds pretty cool....

I ordered it today and should have it Friday. I was pleasantly surprised about the overdrive. It may become an overdrive replacement or something to warm up a few other preamps I own. It would've been nice with a DI but I plan to put it in front of a few things for different reasons... 1. The caveman bp1 compact for a little eq 2. The bergantino superpre for another option. Not sure about the noble which seems to sound "right" with everything in front of it

Sounds awesome! Ive been looking for something like this for a long time. One thing though, what is the point of having a guitar player do a bass pedal demo..? Sure you can play bass but can you PLAY bass…

There is literally a plethora of amazing bass players that could have done that demo that would have really sold it for what it is but instead we get somebody who knows the product and is obviously capable but isn’t quite up to really pulling the sounds out of the instrument to make it shine properly.. Rant over, great pedal… I’ll defo buy one
huh? Ian Allison is a bass player

Luckily; a friend of mine is coming to my country soon, so he will bring one to me. Two videos were enough to decide :D

Lack of blend control on drive pedals usually ticks me off, but this thing seems to sound natural without the blend. Let's see if this thing can replace Darkglass stuff on my board; I use them for mild / medium overdrive anyway.

I find it interesting that so many replies have focused on the DCX Bass as a preamp. I understand that it is because it's based on the 610, but I'm much more intrigued by Origin Effects releasing an overdrive pedal voiced for bass and featuring their adaptive circuity. If you want a bass preamp with a DI out, isn't that what the BassRigs are? Origin Effects already did that. This is them doing something different. Or rather, doing what they've long done for guitar (RevivalDrive, etc.), only now for bass.

I'm not sure I understand the concept here. An emulation of a studio preamp without a balanced XLR output? You're basically running the console into the amp, rather than the opposite. The eq section is also extremely limited (like on a real 610), basically just high/low shelf, no mid control.

As someone who owns an actual 610 as well as a nice selection of other studio preamp I would have been far more excited about a bass oriented Neve-in-a-box pedal. Don't get me wrong, the 610 can be very nice for bass but it's not really THAT special. A Neve 1073 with the input pushed into saturation on the other hand... now that's pure MAGIC for bass guitar! It would still seem rather pointless without a balanced output though.

At least it's not nearly as expensive as their BassRig pedals but with this feature set it's basically just a glorified dirt pedal IMO. Which is ok as long as you know what you're buying and can get some cool tones out of it I guess.

Have you tried the Neve RNDI?? I like mine and find it adds a lot extra even not using phantom power, so always go through it with my bass into amp return. Would be cool to know someones opinion of it who has actual top end gear.

I've only used it twice at someone else's studio but I was very impressed. If I didn't already own a 1073 as well as a nice selecion of high end DI boxes I would definitely have gotten one immediately. It has been on my list of "things I want but don't really need" for a long time now. But this is a DI box, not a preamp, so not really comparable to a 610/DCX. You can't crank the RNDI into saturation/distortion.

I'm not sure I understand exactly how you're using it though. I wouldn't expect the RNDI to work at all without phantom power. The "thru" jack output should have a signal I guess but that's because it doesn't actually go through the RNDI at all, it's just a parallel "bypassed" output for amps. The XLR output shouldn't have a signal at all without phantom power. At least if the RNDI works like every other active DI box out there...???

But like I said, I've only tested it twice and it was used like a traditional DI: Balanced/XLR output to micpre, thru/jack output to amp. Unless I'm missing something here I don't think it's really designed to be used in front of an amp the way you seem to be using it, except for a clean, bypassed "thru" signal at the jack output. You won't get the tone of the RNDI from the "thru" output. At least if it works like other DI boxes. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
