New Origin Effects DCX Bass

I was wondering about this 50hz rise on the DCX Bass and the use of a high pass filter first in my chain. It seems that having an HPF device set at about 50hz would interact with the bass control of the DCX? Or perhaps the HPF just starts of roll-off at that 50hz peak and they can still work well together. But having a HPF set much higher would seem to limit the DCX bass control effect?

Maybe would be more helpful to run the HPF after the DCX bass to somewhat control the wide "bloom" of the 50Hz boost? Unless of course the wide rise/bloom of the 50Hz Q is desirable, then the HPF would just be choking that (if ran after the DCX)

For example, run a fairly aggressively sloped HPF at 40Hz to control the 20-39Hz that is being bumped from the LF knob on the DCX. If DCX > HPF
 
But.... the DCX sounds so good, I'm reluctant to mess with it. You know, I see that chart and I see all that gain in the 40-60hz range, but the device sure doesn't sound like its pushing all those sub frequencies. Whatever its doing it is doing it very smoothly.

Hey you know, if it sounds good then it IS GOOD!!



Except sometimes in the case of a mix lol

Pedal: DCX BASS

MODE:
EQ
VOICE: FLAT
DRIVE: Minimum
LEVEL: Maximum

YELLOW: HF & LF fully clockwise, boosting at maximum.
GREEN: HF & LF at 12 o'clock, set for a flat frequency response. Within +/-0.5dB from around 30Hz-10kHz, the 3dB point is out of the range of hearing.
RED: HF & LF fully counter clockwise, cutting at maximum.

NOTE: The metering on the left hand side is the metering of the input signal level on our test hardware, hence it only displaying -X numbers. If you want to work out how much boost/cut is happening at any point, treat the GREEN line as your 0dB reference. Anything higher than that is boosting, anything lower is cutting, the meter goes in increments of 1dB.

So yes, the Q on all of this is really nice and wide. When designing the pedal, we spent a pretty good chunk of time carefully tuning the EQ points and the EQ interactions across each pedal (Boost & Bass). All with aims of keeping them feeling really musicial rather than anything approaching surgical. In the low-end the difference isn't really worth talking about, in the high-end the difference between the units is a more appreciable. That said, both Boost & Bass offer these really wide bands, so neither is likely to sound 'incorrect' on the opposing instrument. Designing the EQs in a way that we helps keeps them usable across their full sweep was quite an important design criteria for us (obviously, depending on use case).

As someones correctly pointed out, the frequency peaks of this, especially on the low end, sit lower than you might find on a typical pedal-style EQ. In the low-end especially this gives the low band a gentle low-shelving quality as the peak so low. You're only losing about 1.5dB between 39-20Hz, which on a bass guitar is unlikely to be appreciable.

As well as the differing frequency response between the Boost & Bass, there are some minor tweaks to the gain structure of each pedal that we thought necessary to further tune each unit for their respective audiences. We generally recommend people purchase the one that matches the instrument they intend to primarily use it on. We fully expect there to be a degree of interchangeability between the two.

Given what could be seen as minor differences, if you're wondering why we made the 2 models... A lot of us are studio nerds who've worked/work in recording studios, or at pro-audio companies like Focusrite & Solid State Logic. So when we were playing around with prototypes there was a degree of "Wow this sounds great on bass & guitar... It'd probably sit better on guitar if we did X/Y/Z minor tweaks... hmm bass might benefit from a slight alteration in A/B/C". At which point two slightly different models were born, in part to offer people a more optimised product, in part to satisfy our own ears.

Got to hear my bass tone in front of the PA during soundcheck yesterday and I am really happy with the result.
These are the settings that I am using. Bear in mind, most of the sound shaping is coming from my Quad Cortex, but the light saturation provided by the DCX is really cool :bassist:

Mine arrived yesterday. I have used overdrives before to make my sound a little bit warm. In my big board (those days before my HX Stomp) I used to run a copy of the JHS Morning Glory with a Blend. Great pedal that I still have. Then, I moved to the Aguilar Tone Hammer + MXR Microamp. With the Tone Hammer with the AGS on very subtle and with the Microamp I added some nice saturation when the song required it. It was pretty cool and I loved it.
But this thing is really different. As an overdrive, I think the Aguilar was a little bit more pleasant. However, as a whole, I think nothing beats the DCX. I am not 100% sure what it is, but I just prefer it on all the time. It's subtle, but it's there. Probably the best preamp I've ever had.

Here's my latest pedalboard. I do really love how the DCXBass plays with the Bassrigs and the Cali76.

Great set-up. How are you staging the Bassrigs and DCX with resect to the cab sim on either of the Bassrigs? I see the cabsim switch is set to bypass on both bassrigs. Are you taking the DI from one of the Bassrigs? Are you applying the cabsim to anything upstream when it is bypassed?

I have both bassrigs, as well, and am using the '64 going into the SV and using its 8x10 cabsim. But this also requires the upstream DCX to be effected by the cabsim which I don't want. So, I can turn the cabsim off when in bypass but then the '64 gets no cabsim and its ampsim tone alone is quite different, less smooth.

Curious how others with both Bassrigs have to all staged.
 
The DCX is indeed a great pedal, although from my experience, it’s great as a preamp with slight breakup in EQ mode, and doesn’t need anything else after. However in Drive mode, it does benefit from having a preamp after; such as a SansAmp BDDI V2 in my case. The preamp thickens the drive and makes it more band-suitable.

The DCX Bass affects mids, I'd guess, via its Drive control? However, since Drive impacts loudness, I twist it, then want to revisit Level. Then L.F.

It's one of those pedals where, when you turn one knob, you end up turning them all to rebalance (except maybe H.F.) With this pedal, the results are most often satisfying. It sweetens tone best the way you described - EQ mode, minimal drive. The more drive you add, the more it disrupts the signal to pedals downstream, which can be a pro or a con.
 
I've found that while I liked the DCX from the get go, I absolutely LOVE the tones I'm getting out of it with a Broughton SBM driving it.

It drives the DCX to saturation perfectly, increases it's touch sensitivity, & provides a bump to the lows/fatness. For my use case, it's Fan—FREAKING—tastic!!!

Prior to adding SBM I found that I was cranking the Drive knob on the DCX higher in hopes to get more saturation, but always seemed to get some unpleasant artifacts that I hated. Also, with the drive setting higher I felt like I needed more lows than I could dial in with the LF knob. I essentially either had to run it with less saturation than I liked, or had to deal with the artifacts and too little lowend. The SBM corrects for all that & now I'm in love!

I like it so much I bought a second SBM so I could run the same SBM > DCX chain on both of my boards.

I might be wrong but I’m achieving something similar with the Cali76 CB before the DCX. I set the Cali’s output higher than unity gain, so it helps drive the DCX in a really good way. I’m not too fussed about the adaptive circuitry, so a steady, compressed sound into the DCX actually works for me.

Totally! I run my compressor(s) after dirt to retain more dynamics and touch sensitivity, but I can see the Cali76CB above line level working well to boost both the signal/saturation & providing more low end.

Has anybody been able to compare DCX Bass to SA Zio? It seems to have similar feature set...

i have both and IMO, they're completely different animals. the DCX has much more drive capability and the ZIO is more of a tone enhancer.
