Double Bass New! Pirastro Perpetual Double Bass strings

Just put a set on my bass last night (had them ship me a set a few weeks back but have been on the road mostly since then)

First thing to say is that this is also on a new bass and a new bass to me, which so far I have only had super dead sprios on, which I felt were lacking on some life on this bass anyways so decided to put these on before I threw down the money for a new set of sprios.

For me I am experiencing what everyone else has mentioned this far, really nice attack, great feel in both right and left hand, clear and full. The only thing for me is that they are much lower tension than I prefer, especially under the bow, also I don't feel like they are quite as clear as sprios under the bow in the upper register. I think sprios are fine to bow, and these seem the same or easier. ADG all seemed to break in really quickly but the E/C is still a bit twangy.

If I only played pizz I think they would be amazing but under they bow they feel "squishy" to me, kind of like downtuned solo strings but the sound is much more pleasing and full. Maybe they aren't quite that loose, but not far from it. I like to feel some resistance from the string without having to get closer to the bridge unless I want to. I'm going to keep them on my bass for a bit longer and see if I change my mind. I think if they had a higher tension set I would be much more interested, but for now I'm thinking a new set of sprios are going to be had in the near future.

I got offered the same deal, but wasn’t sure how to do a bank transfer.

Of course, the day before I was going to go to the bank and ask, my wife’s minivan broke down and pilfered all my money.

Maybe the universe wants me to stop being a string junkie?

Even with the bank transfer fee it came to about $45 less than the retail price.

Gotta say,

I dig the old spiro/oliv G track/sound the most. The Perpetual whole set is probably too new to even compete. But in those, I can hear a nosy midrange that I don't hear in the old spiro/oliv mix, and that I am sure will be quite pronounced on my bass. I have, as I said, ordered Perpetuals on the test discount deal, but I'll refrain from restringing for now. I won't give up the earth shattering fundamental (and long sustain plus growl if called for) I'm getting from my full Eudoxa set anytime soon. The most intriguing thing I have heard about the Perpetuals is about their feel- I imagine that suppleness being immediately lovable.

Just to compare again after going back to recordings of my bass with spiros on it. I can hear the bass is tighter and I can hear the difference in power. What I like about the perpetuals is that they are a little lighter, and are very fast and responsive. I raised my action yesterday and that helped a lot.

I really like the low B. Best low B string that Pirastro has ever made, for sure. The orchestra is off for the next 6 weeks so I wont be able to use it in combat for a while, but so far it's my favorite low B string.
I was told that Pirastro is not giving away any more trial sets. They will sell you a trial set for a reduced price (50%, I think) but Pirastro doesn't accept PayPal so you have pay a wire transfer fee.

Dave, I would consider these to be an excellent hybrid string. They are so similar to the Obligatos that it really surprising that they are such different compositions (synthetic vs rope-steel).

As to Corellis I couldn't say as I've never played those. The Perpetual bow very well but I'm not much of an arco player. Perhaps @Sam Dingle would add his thoughts.

I would compare these to spiros under the bow. I am a little rusty. I don't think that they would be a great arco only string. For my needs these get a slightly warmer sound than spirocores under the bow. Not as nice as Evahs, belcanots.

So no I don't consider this a hybrid string. I don't think theres such a thing. Always a compromise.
