Double Bass New! Pirastro Perpetual Double Bass strings

Idk about hrs, but a week or two i had a tab open on my phone and would read in my spare time.
Started around pg 60 to see what the talk was about after Pirastro offered me a deal, i asked about the Evahs and mentioned i was using Oliv g/d and said it would be nice to find something somewhat similar with more durability.
Then went all the way back to pg 1 looking for videos. Then in the middle i was skipping ahead by two pages looking for talk of the stark gauge to start.

Got a nice bass in from Romania, never played it and decided when getting it setup to start out with the full perpetual setup with stark g/d.
My old bass in mostly disrepair has oliv g/d with worn out spiro e/a. If the perps don’t do it for me i will use the other setup. i read through this whole thread lol.

I had such high hopes. I hoped that Perps would work on my bass which never liked Spiros but maybe would like Perps if they were less edgy and metallic sounding. Sad to say, after trying them a couple of times they just didn't do it- too twangy and never lost that edge. Arco didn't ever lose the scratch, and I do too much bowing to tolerate it. I have a bassist friend who likes Spiros but is looking for something less stiff. I'll give them to him- worth a try.

i got the bass sent to me with no tuning machines (i already had some spares) and ready for my luthier to do the setup on.

Has anyone tried regular perpetual G & D over Spirocore (S42) weichs?

Maybe...I did a lot of experimenting with Perps and Spiros in the dark days of COVID.

I didn't find that mixing anything in made Perpetuals better. They're well balanced and own their thing pretty well.

I recently put them back on while I was recovering from a hand surgery, but have gone back to Spirocores. They're both excellent string sets, but in my experience, don't share very well with each other.

I remember liking the D & G perpetual but thought the E was weak and the A was bland. Which is weird because I usually have the opposite problem.

I have a full set of Spiro weichs on right now and like the E & A but find the D & G too bright.

S42 Weich were too whiney for me, especially the D&G.

3885 Weich were better, more like S42 Mittel. As a matter of fact, I'm using S42 Mittel G with 3885 E-D and it's a nice setup on my bass.

Perpetuals are nice too, the set I have is past it's useful life and I went Spirocores rather than replace them.

I’m thinking of going back to S42 mitts. I had the same set on my bass close to 2 years and they just worked for everything.

The more experienced I get, the less appealing experimenting with strings becomes.
