I play mostly blues and reggae. With the tone backed off a bit, it sits in the pocket really well. My Ibanez PJ is a little bright for me (active-only tone control; very touchy; going to be moved on).
I've always wanted a straight P bass, and this one suits me perfectly. It just feels good.
Comparing tone to other P basses isn't something I can do (no experience), so I can't give you any relevant comparisons.
I'm sold on short scale basses.
There are a lot of basses out there in the $700 range, but I think you'd be hard-pressed to do better.
A note on availability: When I bought mine last month, there was very little stock available. None of the big boys had any. zZounds and AMS each had 5 (one grey, one white and three blue). zZounds now has one white and 3 blue, unless they've sold one or more.
I still can't believe how well set-up mine was right out of the box (no 55-point check like Sweetwater). It came with a small plastic bag with 2 allen wrenches and a "Set up to play!" sticker on it, initialed by whoever did the setup. And it was!
