New Sire P Basses!

They apparently asked customers and found the majority wanted the J neck so that's what they're offering as stock. I still think they should have made the P neck a stock option though. Hoping they reconsider.

Me too.. because this was a done deal for me.. It just makes absolutely no sense to expect anyone to buy the bass .. and another neck ... No sense at all.. a poor business decision..

You cannot convince me that the extra cost of providing a stock option with a P neck is greater than the lost sales of those who will just choose to not buy the bass at all.. like me. I don't buy basses to swap out necks.. I buy the bass I want.. or the bass I think I want.. but I will not be buying this one..

That's besides the point, this is obviously a lot more than just a P bass. Nothing wrong with that preamp. You don't have to use it if you don't want, leave it in passive and you've got your 3 knobs.

FWIW, my USA Fender P has more than 3 knobs, so Fender "did it wrong" too (by your standards).

I guess I should have used a winking smiley face or something, as the intent was sarcasm.

Having said that, I accounted for the "PJ" configuration, hence why I said 3 knobs and not 2!

It does seem odd that given the sheer number of options and the fact that they are going to manufacture p-necks, they aren't offering at least one or 2 colors of 4 string P-necked bass.

Seriously, just put out one model -perhaps a p-necked 4 sting alder/rosewood sunburst with tort...- out there to test the market. I think they'd be pleasantly surprised.

The "people like J necks" statement is silly because the question they should be asking is what kind of necks are people buying on p-style basses.

Just offering it in a 4 string in 1 or 2 colors would be just as silly... That would be a mistake too...
Just offer the bass in all options.and add the P neck as an additional option. That is the best course for this.

Even if they did not make a huge batch of P necks.. which would mean that in some cases initially if you wanted a P neck you might have to wait the extra month or however long it took to finish a P neck to the same standards.. because they didn't want a stock of necks that few people wanted.. I am certain that folks who preferred a P neck would be willing to wait longer if need be.. I would. I'd rather do that than spend an extra whatever the neck would cost to have this piece of wood laying around mt house that I will never use..

Unless there is something so drastically different about the necks at the point where they connect to the body that I am unaware of ... Correct me if I am wrong but I am thinking that since the necks would be interchangeable.. at the pocket they would be exactly the same so .. it just makes no sense at all to not offer that option.

The proper question would be, always, what do most of our customers want with this new product? Which they asked and answered: J necks.

This is a PJ and and not a P, but in re-asking your question "what kind of neck are people buying on PJ basses", the answer is.... J necks, mostly.

But, still, I concur that they should just provide the option of either neck, stock from the factory. None of this "buy an extra neck if you don't like the one on it" stuff. P players should at least be able to get a P neck if Sire is going to call this PJ a P.

I wonder why Fender put a J neck on this, if nobody likes them on PJ's?

I agree that more options should exist. Having to swap a neck is not something that most musicians want to mess with and there's no way that sales of folks buying the extra neck will be indicative of the total number of folks who want a p-width neck.

My thought was that if they are stuck in this particular j-neck mindset, the sales of a P-necked tort/sunburst/rosewood would quickly push them back into reality and show them the potential market.

No one is saying there isn't a market for j-necked P-s. They're just saying that Sire is missing the boat a bit.

As I indicated, I agree. They should offer both. They'll miss out on some sales this way (I was not going to buy one, if it came with a P neck only with the J as a separate purchase, which was the original plan). But I disagree when you say the question "do people like J necks" is the wrong question (it isn't), and that the question should be "what necks do people buy on P basses?" (It shouldn't as this is a PJ bass despite the name). They ought to offer both necks, but if they aren't gonna do that, then the J is the obvious choice between the two. More people like them and probably most PJ's have them.

My intuition is that after the initial run here, they may switch to offering both necks stock since there is a lot of interest in both and annoyed customers who can't get their preferred neck are not a good thing. They probably can't change that horse in mid-stream right at this moment. I predict that it will be so, eventually.

Not really. Their first decision after their poll was P neck.

That was a special FSR MIM model, discontinued. The top level Fender mass produced P-bass should be the Precision USA Deluxe (now Elite), a PJ with P-neck.
It's pretty much logic that the other way around is an exception, not the rule.

So, I cannot get a P7 with a black body, black pickguard and maple fretboard. :bawl:
and I cannot get a P7 with a sunburst body, tort pickguard and maple fretboard. :bawl:
Something I like : no black blocks even on maple FB like the VV7, only white pearloid blocks.

Not sure that helps your argument because it basically reinforces the need for a J-neck offering. If they sold as many J-neck PJs to the people that bought J-neck Js, Im sure theyd be quite happy with sales volume. That said i hope they do offer both necks in the end

I don't think so; the P neck decision surely did not precede their "polling" which ran 2-to-1 in favor of J necks. Otherwise, why would they poll, and then go with what people did not want by a 2-1 margin? Makes no sense to me.

Or perhaps, possibly, they polled, elected to go P neck, then polled again and got the opposite result? Possible, maybe. I

If they DID re-poll, the only logical reason to do so would be that they realized that their first poll was woefully inadequate and was likely giving them an inaccurate result

The only mention I saw of "polling" was when they announced their J neck plan and decision reversal where they cited this polling. Perhaps you have some better info and I'll gladly reverse myself if they had previously said that "although our polling shows people prefer J necks 2-to-1 we decided to go with the one people didn't want" or if they did 2 polls and got opposite results.

If there was an announcement from Sire saying they polled and most picked the P neck, I never saw it. Did I just miss it?

The one bass I mentioned was not meant to be representative of all bases, but merely an example of the popularity of jazz necks with PJ's. The Fender Precision American Standard P is a PJ with a jazz neck. not sure what their relative sales numbers are, between that and the Precision USA Deluxe (now Elite) you cite.... and even if we did, we'd likely be picking nits.... I guess until one of us whips out sales numbers by model for Fender and all PJ makers, we just won't know for sure. I know some people like the P neck on 'em... and I hope you can get one!

Bottom line is, as with any product, they should give people the neck that will sell the most units, if they have to pick just one neck. They did. Hard to fault that choice.

But, we'd be better off focusing on points of agreement-- that Sire should offer both necks stock. It almost seems silly that they will not. Eventually-- I have $10 says they will offer both stock. Just not now.
