NEW Squier Telecaster Bass!

To be honest, I never really saw these sticking around for too long. There just seems to be too small an audience. And, let's face it, they're very gimmicky. Not that they're not cool, or good instruments, but they are. Which means, I'm just waiting for the blowout :D

Although I have not found references to this w/pics etc, Tim Bogert (Vanilla Fudge) is seen playing what I've heard was to be a signature Tele bass (34" scale
bass with a Tele guitar body like these Squiers) in 1968 on the Ed Sullivan Show. The '51 style Telecaster bass was already being produced (the first Fender RI) and apparently it was too much for CBS to deal with (or something) as it wasn't followed through. Note that it has at least 2 pu's including the HB that hadn't been released yet (as on the Telecaster Bass Mk II) and a Hootinanny peg on the back of his Tele hs.

- a great performance!

What a great clip! Love these guys and I am a long time Tim Bogart admirer. Their first album is in steady rotation in my car after all these years - and their version of Eleanor Rigby still gives me goose bumps. Saw them at a show in Cobo Hall in Detroit around this same time. Amazing clip and I can't believe Fender actually made even ONE Tele bass with the Tele shape back then. Thought the VM Modified Squier was the first go round.

Amazing, thanks so much for this!

I found out recently that TB is on fb, so I asked to 'friend' him which he graciously did. So after I posted this I went to his page and inquired about this prototype Tele bass. I've not received anything yet, but when I do I'll post it here.

Tim Bogert was probably my most favorite bass player back then. Him and Jack Bruce, Jack Cassidy, and John Paul Jones. Yah, I liked Maca and Bill Wyman but for me - these guys were among the top R&R bass players of the new era. I had no idea who James Jamerson was, and was still a couple years before I learned of all the great Jazz bass players. Love the Vanilla Fudge, love Tim's energy and drive - I know every note of his (live) solo on "Break Song" - "Tim Bogert, on the Fender bass - Thank You!"

Oh man, right up there as a favorite for me too. I remember at the Cobo show he had this small fuzz box - of course I couldn't tell from the audience what brand - and during the solo, he went for it and all hell broke loose. He had no other pedals or stompboxes, just the fuzz box. He was phenomenal. The solo was so great - somehow he managed to use his awesome chops and stick with fundamentals and never sounded like a frustrated guitar player - that is what I admired most. That may not be a perfect description - but you know - he ALWAYS sounded like a bass player somehow.

You are so spot on - how many times in our lives did we both say "Tim Bogert, on the Fender bass - Thank You!" Ah, such memories!

I wonder if this same "Telebass" was used by Tim during his tenure with "Beck, Bogart and Appice"? Anyone have any clips of that?

He usually played standard P's w/Tele necks & electronic mods (looks to be a small bridge pu which was also on the Tele-bass...an early P/J?)
