NEW Squier Telecaster Bass!

Is there routing underneath the pickguard or is everything in that chrome control plate?

Here is the body stripped of paint:

Finally, after taking forever, got my re-imagining finished. I really like the piezo bridge, the pickups provide a "closeness" that I was missing from my Fender Basses - which is a very nice addition when blended in with the mags.

Holy cow, that is an absolute stunner!!!!! Dude....

What do you mean by "closeness"?

Thanks so much for the kind words....

Wow, this is SO hard to describe in words. I have two Roscoe basses as below which are ONLY piezos. When Keith built me the first one, at band rehearsal - every time I switched off the mags and played only with the piezos the band went WHOA - what did you do? Eventually, I wasn't using the Bartolinis at all.

Long story short, I sent the body back to Keith and had him make a new one with no mags at all. I also loved the clean look of all that fine wood with no pickups. I was also using the bass with the midi system to trigger my VBass which gave me a pretty incredible pallet of sounds, including fretless and upright options along with modeling a lot of amps.

I had retired the PRS (it's too valuable to take out of the house) and I got used to the Roscoe bass as it was the only bass I had besides the PRS. I eventually had him make me a twin, for string breakage on stage and having a spare.

I realize this may not be answering your question, and sounds like a ramble - but the first thing I noticed with the piezos, is that I had to really clean up my playing. The piezos pick up every nuance of your playing including string noise. I settled on half rounds on the Roscoes so that they cut down on excess finger noise, and figured out other subtle ways of "cleaning up" my playing. The piezos are immediate and unforgiving, so uber-clean and articulate that they create a closeness to me. You would understand the difference by playing it just for a minute or so. But on the Fender I wanted the growl too which the piezos don't do very well. It is almost like the difference between a harsh but insanely cool and dirty tube amp vs. a super clean transistor based power amp. Or even the difference between a clean direct signal path vs. a miked up amp. I use mags only and I am sometimes a little disappointed. I use piezos only and I am sometimes a little disappointed. I use both and I grin big.

I may end up putting piezos on a lot more of my Fender collection, I have to spend more time with this to see if it might be worth it for me. By the way, I wanted to keep this set-up ultra simple, so I played with the tone of the piezos and locked it down. It only has a volume control so I can gently mix it in with the mags.

Hope this gives you a sense of it....

Anyone with experience with Piezos, please chime in - not sure I did a very good job with explaining this.

Hello,
I just bought a special at Thomann. Being the first time I buy Squier (I own a P and J made in USA)
I'm a bit disapointed on the finishing of the instrument. Mainly the paint job. Am I asking too much or do the pictures tell you I have an particularly bad one, in your opinion ?
Thanks for your judgement.

I'm in a low speed WiFi spot right now, but from what I saw, I wonder what your expectations are?

If you dislike the blurring and lack of detail at the truss rod adjustment hole - and that's all I can see at low resolution, I don't think there's any room for dissatisfaction.

Typically, the black part is a piece of ABS plastic tubing, cut and polished in profile to the curve of the headstock and is subject to some bleeding in detail in many situstions. Again: a non-issue I believe.

That the neck pocket is less than molecular-tight doesn't really mean much either. After all, vibrational forces animating the body with tight fitting pockets is a myth anyway. Any freqs getting into the body are in a black hole of no return, and of no value in the actual voice of a non-reflexive and none acoustically active slab of wood.

I don't see anything wrong w/the p'up unless the parallax view has you chagrined, but that's likely a non-proble!m too.

Frankly, it isn't 'paint' about which you are complaining, but prolly a polyester clear coat.

Yeah, that neck pocket is a real hack job, you should ask for an exchange or a partial refund. I got my Tele Special from Sweetwater and it had a scratch on the pickguard. I love the bass and didnt really care but I emailed Sweetwater asking for a partial refund and they gave me $60 back. Ive owned a few Squiers and the quality of finish has always been fine. Ive never seen one like yours.

Well,

As I said, my question was can I ask for a better finish from Squier quality/price range. Some of you are telling me there are no problems what so ever, except that you would never have a Fender with such poor finish. Question was: is this an escpecialy bad one ?
GRRG63, you seem to have a better instrument than the one I have. Thomann only offered me 20 Euros as a discount. I'm yet not sure to return the instrument and ask for a new one.

I really wanted to like these basses, sadly every one I've played has had round wounds and was very buzzy on the lower strings. I preferred the single pup version, but the necks and setup are not up to the quality of the rest of the VM line. A setup, and level/crowning would be required on the four I've played.
The stupid deal today puts it at a more realistic price.
With MF being Fenders #1 customer, Stupid Deals often indicate a model about to be discontinued.

Edit: Only the blonde version is the stupid deal.

The black special model was the SDOD a couple weeks ago. I hope they start blowing the single coils out the door, cuz I love my special.

I was able to get MF to substitute a Vintage Blonde version of the VM Telecaster Bass Special a couple of weeks ago when the black one was the "STOTD". I would imagine that you could ask them to substitute the black one today. I also think you could probably get them to offer the same price on the one-pickup version if you were so inclined. It costs nothing to ask, and I have found MF to be very flexible in working with me in the past.

As ux4484 was saying, I also believe that this model is soon to be discontinued, so if any of you have been waiting to grab one of these, NOW is the time, and TODAY is the day! The other good news is that many big box retailers have now reduced the "street price" of these from $299.99 to $249.,99. So, you can save $20.00 today at MF, or grab one for a good price while supply lasts. Don't wait!
