About two weeks ago I saw the New Standard basses listed on the Upton website. I even called and asked about a hybrid La Scala. I went on Upton site today, and the is no mention of New Standard basses. Did something happen to their business arrangement? I called Upton--they are closed today. I called New Standard(Wil DiSola), and the call was never answered. Anybody know anything about this? I'm looking for a La Scala.

Double Bass New Standard and Upton

If you notice both Shen & "New Standard" are no longer being handled by Upton... they've been pumping a lot of effort into their own line lately... you can pretty much count on it staying that way from what I understand.
It was my understanding that they were simply a dealer for Shen, but were involved as a business partner with New Standard. I'm not certain, but I thought that they would be involved in finishing the NS basses, not just selling them. I may be wrong about everything, but I'm curious about the situation.

You guys dont miss a beat! The scoop: we were involved with the assembling and then setting up the instruments for some time now. Upton Bass was doing all the work that Arnold once did in the past. (Just the woodworking) I can speak for Arnold here and say, amongst other reasons he really wanted to focus on his own basses, restoration, and repair. I know he is glad to have done that.
Essentially, well identically that's exactly where we found ourselves in this partnership after trying it for a bit. To sum it up; Arnold was Wills partner, we took that element over..but...alas it's not working out for us. And for the record, Will has and continues to do all the finishing on the NS basses.
Will still has the line of basses and I suggest folks interested contact him directly.
With the Shens its pretty much the same story for us at Upton Bass. We are here to still take care of those instruments we sold in the past but won't be selling them any longer. Who knows, things change but this is the plan for now with the Shen line of basses.

Thanks for the update, Gary. I spoke with Derek last week about Shen, as I was seriously considering either an SB88 or (preferably) an SB150 from you guys for a July purchase, mainly because of your setup upgrades. As much as I would love an Upton hybrid, its out of my price range unless I luck out into a used one. Guess I'll have to continue my search. Please be sure to let us know of any future changes.

You'd be surprised how good a quality laminate that's well thought out and executed can be! We had someone into Mystic this week ready to plunk down hard saved loot on a SB150...but has ordered a newly built Standard Laminate instead after really examining them side by side in the showroom.
We're passionate about what we do...and we kill ourselves doing it for you. Give Gary or I a call and we'll explain our position and thoughts much better than what we can do here on the forum.

As with any of these discussions, ears are the best judge. However, I bought my bass from Upton based on reviews and discussions with Gary & Eric w/o ever hearing or playing one. That said, I've had my Upton Standard Ply for four + years and still love it. I've played 100s of gigs with it and still love the tone. It's super sturdy so I've had zero functional issues. Maybe someday I'll buy an expensive carved concert bass but for my Americana/Jazz gigs I have no GAS. Upton=A+++
Thanks for the comments, Eric. Also, nice to hear Stephen's comments on the standard ply. I'm debating driving down to the IBS show in June, but $130 just to look at basses for a day is a bit steep. If I don't see there, you will definately still see me at your Mystic shop in July.

They had a 7/8ths hybrid La Scala there in March and it was smokin'! Nice bass. As were ALL of the basses there; good stuff all around.
So . . . now that Arnold and Upton are out of the picture, who is doing the actual assembly and setup of the New Standard basses? is it Wil? I know he was doing most of the finishing (and has done so very well I might add). And, where can these basses be seen?

Yes, a change has been made as the last match did not work out well for either party.
Business will continue with the two widely known and appreciated models in plywood, hybrid and fully carved.
Also, there are two new models to complement the lineup:
a 7/8 La Scala and a 7/8 gamba named the Brandenburg, both of which will only be offered in hybrid and fully carved forms for now. Quality of construction remains unchanged, as well as the highly appreciated sound, setup and finish.

No worries. But as far as I can tell, the OP is looking for a New Standard La Scala. Which seems to be something Eric's shop isn't carrying any more.
