I tried today on an old Squire Japan jazzbass that hung in a studio for... well, a loooot of years without use, those strings must have been ooold, tried this and it took maybe 15 minutes, now it's like I've restringed the bass! The techs are happier than ever for not needing to change strings on it, now they can record with it again...

I wonder if this has any effect on flatwounds? I guess not, but I don't know!

What about slipping something thin over the fret wires to prevent wear during the process?
Same idea without worn frets?

Legit. It's an old trick. As old as tying a broken string to the bridge. As old as boiling strings.

The string compresses back and squeezes the finger funk, covering less of the string surface. Also, some of the goop flakes off the string as well.

It is so ****ing legit. I did it on my Oscar Schmidt beater acoustic bass, which I've NEVER put new strings on. Wow.

I also did it on my Squier 5-string Jazz, which I bought for my stepson and he moved out and left it at my house. Strings are at least 4 years old on it. WOW again.

This thing works and is amazing. I'm curious as to how many times it will work.

I think that is mainly what I'm getting out of it. The goop stuck in between the windings comes out, and the string is springier as a result.

I bet it would have less of an effect on pressurewounds since there are less cavities for gunk to collect in. Just a theory.

I'll find out tonight...and I can do a for-real comparison, as I have a new set of the same strings waiting to be installed. I'll try the pop technique first and then install the new ones and see how it sounds in comparison to the 'cleaned' set.

I just tried it again, but this time after I slapped the crap out of my strings, I cleaned the strings with a bass-brites(deoxit) cloth while they were untensioned.

Holey moley, my strings sound nearly brand new. They still have some thump from being played for hundreds of hours, but all of the overtones are back.

I wait for my strings to get old enough to sound good - usually six months or longer. My oldest strings are 40 years old. I don't think I'll be trying any "string rejuvenation" ideas.
