New: Zoom B3n Multi-Effects

So...what is the consensus on DI box for use with B3n?

I use a passive Fender J-Bass and an active Ibanez SR-500. For (non-pro) recording purposes, I want to use a DI from the B3n to the mixer (Zoom L-12).

Typically, I use the B3n about 50% of the time. I've yet to fully integrate it with my band. Absent the B3n, I'm having a hard time figuring out which Radial DI would cover my bases for both basses. But I figure, if I commit to using my B3n, a passive DI (JDI, ProDI or SB-2) would suffice for both my passive and active basses. Is this a correct assumption?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

this of course not a consensus...

I was also searching for a DI box for my B3n and had learnt a lot about DI boxes because of this, especially those from Radial Eng. But then I concluded that they cost too much for my also non-pro usage, and that I wouldn't want to choose the one that overpriced the B3n. So, I ended up with stereo passive DI box from Samson which (locally) costed no more than a half of what I paid for the B3n and also still cheaper than a single SB-2.

A stereo DI box was my preference even though I might not use the B3n in stereo. Good thing that stereo DI boxes like the Samson's have stereo to mono downmix, thus in mono mode I could have 2 XLR outputs with the same downmixed signal.

Thanks guys, for the input on DIs. Once I started exploring, I started to feel overwhelmed...mostly because I wanted a DI that would serve my passive and active basses. I did order an SB-2. I figure it'll be good to try out and it won't be wasted if I choose a different product in the future. I can definitely see the benefit of opting for the stereo DI...but I also figured the 1/4 inch stereo outputs can be employed if I choose to experiment.

Very curious to see how everything works out with the Zoom L-12.

As I make my transition from a Boss GT-10B to one of these units, I notice one thing that seems a big disadvantage against the Zoom by comparison:

On the Boss, the system maintains a given patch until you activate another. Meaning, you can have a patch active and cycle far and wide across banks or presets until you find the next one you want; the tone will not change until you actually activate a new patch.

On the Zoom, the tone seems to change to the active patch slot (1, 2, or 3) in whatever patch bank I select or even travel through, even if I do not actually activate the patch.

Does this sound right, or am I doing something wrong? It seems like I may have to keep a clean patch in every bank of my saved presets to avoid audibly cycling through sounds during a song. Not optimal.

Yeah there is a setting where it remains with active until you find/select a new one...

Must have missed that, not tons of opportunity to RTFM between the crushing burdens of my wife, children, the massive financial responsibility I’ve accepted, and all the things I have to do on a daily basis to meet the personal and professional expectations of all the people around me. But I do appreciate the help. I’ll try to make it up by paying about 25x the average in federal tax this year.

Sorry, long day.

LOL. I'm sure you don't want to trade life's war stories with the folks here on this forum. It's TalkBass, and you have been issued the obligatory RTFM. Please take it in stride and try not to let it get you down. For good measure, here's another ;) and a
