New: Zoom B3n Multi-Effects

Thanks everyone for posting the thoughts thus far. I jumped on amazon and have the B3n arriving Thursday. I'm looking to use it to replace an analogue overdrive (porkloin) and octaver (Aguilar). I love the preamp sims on my B3, so I know I'll get use out of the those and the filters on the n as well. I'll post some thoughts once I get some time to do A/B testing.

Do you guys think that using a B3n before the amp and a B3 in the effects loop (as a pedal board) is a good set up?

Not many pedals do well in an amp's effect loop as those signals usually get much hotter than pedals like the B3 can handle. If you absolutely need to run both a B3n and a B3 together, I would put them in series from B3n to B3, and then connect the B3 to either the front of an amp or an amp's effect return.

This thing is so awesome. B3N -> Broughton HPF/LPF -> Pitch black tuner. Done. My pedal board looks so empty. My old pedals look so sad.

BTW, for the discussion on chained power versus using the B3N supplied power cable, I also had a high pitch whine noise when using chained power. The chain should definitely be pushing the amperage needed. I switched to the B3N power cable and the whine was gone.

Congrats!

For those interested, here is a great article on the "whine" issue.

What would be a good set-up in the loop? What kind of pedals should I use, I mean?

I have tried the B3 in the loop as a limiter, a synth and a delay and although I played at low volume, I had no problem as yet - can it damage the unit or will it just not sound good at higher volume?

Glad I decided to take the plunge. I used the Ampeg model for the guitar parts in No One Knows and it sounds really great. Oh and I just bought a used G3n from B&H for $100 *facepalm*

Any recommendations for a decent audio interface for these guys? I'm guessing I won't be keeping the Firehawk FX much longer :)

I don't know why but the whining issue only occurred to me once. And it was not the Zoom. I daisy-chained the Plex with my VT Bass DI and the Zoom in a separate wall wart when it happened. Even when I daisy-chained the Zoom and the GK Plex, both power-hungry 500 ma each, but I haven't encountered the whining. I'm using the 1-spot 1700 ma and the accompanying daisy-chain cables.

Anyways, I'll try different configurations to see any problems but right now mine is silent.

Why facepalm? That's a steal!

Haha, it's because I went from debating whether to get the B3n this soon to getting both units in one weekend. It's a fantastic price for this unit, although I think MSRP $149 brand new is still a great price. Love the amp sims - I'm trying to plug the Diezel VH4 to Zoom as well (why did they release a model of the Herbert before the VH4 >"<)

Now all I need is a decent audio interface and I won't be needing my Firehawk anymore. I don't use the expression pedal ever, so the size of the B3n and G3n are perfect for me.

Okay...finally pulled the trigger this morning. Ordered from Long and McQuade for pick up. No ETA.

I live in a small Toronto house with 2 small kids and a lack of space. It's usually most convenient for me to practice unplugged, and plug-in for band practices at a rehearsal space. I think my main draw to the product is as a practice/headphone amp that's small enough to hideaway (at least this is the excuse I'll offer to my wife). The effects are, of course, an awesome bonus. As it is now, my pedal board goes untouched as it's a chore to pull out on the fly when I want to mess around on bass/guitar. I never get a chance to craft sounds or plan for tunes. And my aging back makes it a literal pain to carry my board around to a jam when I'm not sure if I'm going to use it. I find I mostly just grab my TU-2, and maybe a chorus or delay.

So my hope is that the effects sound nice enough through a cabinet as they might in the headphones. I'm excited to think about crafting patches that complement my tunes...and the idea of being able to experiment and plan in advance is appealing.

Am I going to be disappointed? Will I find that I'm happy to get rid of some of my existing pedals? (I guess I'll see!)

For someone who plays both bass and guitar but only wants one effect unit, would you recommend the B3n or the G3n?

If it matters, I'm not concerned about the amp modeling; probably won't use it. I'm interested more in the effects.
Maybe consider an MS-70CDR. It has some bass-specific choruses that have a low pass filter, as well as stereo ins/outs.

Do you care more about the bass or guitar? This is a bass forum, so if we assume you care more about the bass, then the B3n. ;-)
