Mark, I think I understand what you've said but I'm still curious: Are the outer edges of the grille baffle supported by anything like a rabbeted edge in the faceplate? Looking at the pics on Vintage Blue it doesn't look like it.
The original package of the Portaflex is incredibly cool looking. I was at Texas Tech Band Camp in 75' and one of the directors, Bill Snodgrass, performed with our band using a Portaflex and a Baby Bass; that was my first encounter. FWIW, I've owned a Dan Armstrong lucite guitar since 72' (ser.# 1495) my first decent electric.
