Lions Win opener on the road against a good Tampa Bay team 27-20

When is the lat time I've said that? This team certainly has a mental toughness not seen in these parts in a while.

The Good:

Matt Stafford, he is the real deal, even when he missed he was damn close.

The run defense. The Lions stuffed Blunt, one of the better backs in the league and controlled the line of scrimmage. The LB core is MUCH better than last year and it showed on QB scrambles and short pass tackling (they actually did some)

The Defensive Backfield. They were in an awful lot of one on one against some quality receivers and even when they got beat, it was a battle.

The Bad:

Senseless penalties, and a couple of drops in the first quarter by Pettigrew kept the score from being a blow out.

Linahan (Offensive Coordinator) got far to conservative with the lead. The Lions OL is not going to be able to pound it out on the ground against anyone. They ran the ball good, but they will not run it great. We still needed at least one first down pass in the 4th quarter.

All in all a nice (not great) win against a good team.

I think because they believe their own hype, that they are only a QB away from the Lombardi trophy.;)

McNab in his best days was overrated and got by on sheer physical ability verses intellectual fortitude and discipline. Not a bad guy, just not really a winner. Now he doesn't have the great physical abilities, so he is just plain ordinary. They'll play people tough because they have some playmakers on a mediocre undisciplined defense and Adrian Peterson. But I don't suspect they'll be playing in January.

Wow burk48237, you make some crazy claims this week. First Blount is one of the better RB's in the NFL, now McNabb really wasn't that good. Must be that Detroit win that got you doing the crazy talk.

Mike, Lagarret Blount averaged over 5 yards per carry, gained over a 1000 yards, and averaged 102 yards per game in his last four games of the season, including last years lost to the Lions. I would put that among the better RB's in the NFL.

And McNabb, Meh.

He showed flashes of brilliance during his Super Bowl season, but considering the talent he had around him most of his career and his physical talents, he was an above average QB at best, and never among the elite QB's in the league. And now that his great physical skills have diminished, I suspect he will be a disappointment.

He's a veteran QB and look at how poorly he performed yesterday. Once San diego decided to concentrate on stopping Peterson, daring him to throw, all those great weapons MN has looked like they were shooting blanks. He'll have a couple of good games, maybe, but don't make any playoff plans with him there.

I'd say the guy was pretty damn good at one point. Leading your team to a superbowl appearance must count for something. How would you characterize Trent Dilfer as a QB? He's a superbowl winning QB.

But I agree Mcnabb's better days are way behind him and he fits perfectly the kind of QB on the downside of the career, that the Vikings go after year after year.
