NFL Week #19 THE PLAYOFFS

I recall a story Mike Holmgren told a few years back about when he first arrived in Green Bay to coach. He was shopping in a Bay area grocery store and a little old lady approached him and simply said -
"Hey California, beat the Bears"
LOL
"Hey California, beat the Bears"

Green Bay Packers/Chicago Bears. Been the same teams in the same place since 1923. Mark that down in case you lose track of what rivalry you are referring to with these other teams you suggest are as big or bigger.
Pittsburgh/Cleveland? Cool, but which Cleveland team are we talking about here? The old Browns, the new Browns or the one that became the Ravens?
New England/Indy? Cool, but they ain't the Baltimore Colts anymore are they?
Which Raiders team are you talking about...The LA or the Oakland one?
See...if the Bears moved and became the Pasadena Pixies, I wouldn't give a crap about them anymore even if they stayed in the North division and we still played them twice a year. What kind of rivalry is it when the teams don't even exist anymore?
I HATE Chicago and I hate them all driving up here and polluting our northwoods in the Summer. But most of all I hate the frickin' Chicago Bears themselves and everything about them. Save for hopefully getting to go down there and kick their asses in the NFC Championship game. That is if they have the balls to beat the Seahawks.
Oh...and no I'm not kidding myself as to what Lovie's priorities are. They're the same as every other coach. But don't kid yourself into thinking any rivalry is bigger than the Packers/Bears. It's real, not manufactured between two teams that people still can't decide which teams they actually are.
Ewwww. I did like this email from Simmons' column:
"How could you bet against the Seahawks [in Round 1]? Don't you know that when Pete Carroll is allowed to coach on a Saturday and pay his players, he's practically impossible to beat?" For the record, Bears-Seahawks takes place on a Sunday.
That was not at all the point I made with listing those other games. Not even close.
Those games are big rivalries in the region they are played. You don't care about those games anymore than someone in San Diego cares about your Packers.
Your Packers/Bears rivalry win on longevity, sure. I would still like you to point out one of those match-ups in the last 12 years that had something major riding on it besides your local hate for each other. For example, when did one of those games decide the division title? Not saying it hasn't, so I trust you to tell me since I'm not about to dig through 12 years of Packer/Bear games.
Don't let this stuff boil your blood bro. It really isn't that big of a deal. No matter how many times you yell out how awesome the NFC North is, and how great it has been for 80 years, there are still people who like the NFL that will not care. It's almost like college football in how regional it is.

See, it IS A BIG DEAL. I don't even give a flying ************************ about the North division's place in the NFL. I don't give a crap about the Lions or the Vikings either ('cept for kickin' the traitor's **************** twice this year). You still think this rivalry is about who takes first place and who wins the Super Bowl? This is like a Super Bowl...twice a year. What's on the line? Kicking their *******************...that's what.
Yeah, Packers/Bears is just regional. Where would pro football be without it? Oh, wait let me guess, right where it is now with the fantasy leagues and an NFL Championship that isn't even for the fans anymore. $$$$$$$
Sorry...Packers/Bears brings out the worst in me. This rivalry represents the only thing I even care about in football anymore. If this rivalry is ever over with, my interest in football will go with it.
That's similar to the Jets/Patriots rivalry. IIRC, it's been going on since the 60's. It wasn't started by the media either. What I was taught as a kid was it had something to do with someone kicking the ball that wasn't supposed to and it wound up leading to a Boston Patriots win.
Wikipedia vaguely confirms what I was told, but I couldn't find any definitive proof of when/where/how it actually started. If anyone here knows the full story, I'd love to hear it.

Gosh, Gard...if I didn't know any better, I'd say you were taking that loss personally. The Seahawks are like my old Camaro I had back in the day....when I got it working, it was great....for a day or two. Then I'd be scrounging for parts to get it up and running again. It's a shame they lost to them, as a NFC west long-timer (as in seeing the 49ers play when they had OJ), I have a soft spot in my heart for the old Saints...
Man, for umpteen years now when the Pack plays in San Diego or at any west coast NFL venue, the stadium is seen half full of Packer fans. There are zillions of Packer fans all over the known world. The Packers are truly Americas team. Heck, even the Super Bowl trophy is named after a former Green Bay Packer coach.

Lovie Smith comes to the Bears and makes his priorities to beat the Packers, and oh yeah...win the Super Bowl. The Packers/Bears games are huge even when neither team in in the hunt. Beating the crap out of the other team is more important than winning the Super Bowl.
And some of you still think a rivalry is about getting to the Super Bowl and winning it and if the other team is in the way, all the better.
I can miss other games on TV, but I will NEVER miss a Packer/Bears game...not ever.
so in -those parts- there's no other rivalry that can compare. i can dig that.

Well for one, the last game of THIS season. Pack loses = no playoffs. Bears were already in and even already knew they were the #2 seed. Bears rest their guys? Nope. Bears starters played the entire game only if to keep the Packers out of the playoffs. Now THAT'S rivalry football! Now that I think of it, where's Jive been all season???12 years actually.
Yep, it isn't nearly as old, but the games are much more intense than anything the Packers and Bears have played in that same time frame.
I'll have to rely on you GB and Chicago guys for this one.... besides this last match-up where GB needed a few things to happen to get in the playoffs besides winning themselves, when was the last GB/Chicago match-up with something big on the line?
I'm not discounting the historical significance of the rivals, but it does get to be old when anytime these discussions come up, some NFC North guy pipes up about how the NFC North is the best. Well yeah, they were the best 50 years ago.
