NFL Week #7

Well, you're certainly at odds with every sports commentator whom I've heard discussing these hits in general over the last several days. I haven't heard one of the talking heads say that the hit on Cribbs was illegal. To a person (at least the numerous ones that I've heard), they've all said that there was nothing wrong with that hit. Unfortunate outcome? Yes. Dirty, illegal hit? No. In fact, most have even opined that the only really dirty hit of the weekend was the Merriweather hit on Heap.

What the heck have you been listening to??? Everybody I hear says that Harrison made a couple of illegal hits, with his hit on Mo being the lesser of two evils. And that Dunta Robinson's was not illegal. And that Merriweather's was the worst out of the bunch.
I still can't find a video on the Cribbs hit (a big part of that is because youtube is blocked here) but is it true that he leaped into the side of Cribbs' head while he was wrapped up? Without even extending his arms? I must be missing something here...

I never liked Harrison; always seemed like a punk. And now he's talking about some "Well, I don't know if I can continue to play football with all these wild and crazy new rules; I just may have to retire! I didn't sign up to play no flag football..." Why is it that people have to be ridiculous? Nobody is asking anybody to play flag football. Just quit hitting people in the friggin head. It's not that difficult of a concept.

Cardinals 3-2 what do you guys think of Max Hall? Messy game vs the Saints, but got the job done.

I predict 9-7 or 10-6 into the playoffs.

This was a short reconstruction year.

Not to discount the win for the Cards, but their offense didn't gain 200 yards total against New Orleans. ;) Max Hall was the beneficiary of a REALLY BAD game by the Saints offense, including a bevy of turnovers.

Max Hall didn't get anything "done", job or other wise, he just got a gimme from a team that was stinkin' up the field that day....seriously, an NFL offense that made less than 200 yards on the day "got the job done"? :p The Cards got a gift.

As for the playoffs, don't count chickens before the eggs hatch, no one in the NFC West is out of it yet - including SF if they decide to go on a tear...not that I'm expecting it.

Kind of grainy, but here's the hit. I think that almost anybody who has ever played football would agree that he's just making a play and trying to finish a tackle at this point:

As for "What the heck have I been listening to...", there are a bunch of sources. NFL network. ESPN. Sirius NFL Radio, etc.. IMO, the hit on Massaquoi (spelling?) was much more questionable than the hit on Cribbs. You can believe me or not, but I haven't heard one commentator say that there was anything wrong with the hit on Cribbs. Just an unfortunate result. Cribbs was a runner leading with HIS head. Harrison was coming in from "the West" and was partially screened by another player. He had no idea where Cribbs' head was.

I could be wrong on this, but I don't even think the NFL fined Harrison for the Cribbs hit. The $75K was strictly for the Massaquoi hit. I even the heard the Head of Officials, Ray something (who took over for Mike Perriera) say unequivocally that the hit on Cribbs was NOT illegal. That was on Mike & Mike In the Morning. By the way, Mike Golic felt that the only illegal hit of the weekend was Merriweather's. He clearly disagreed with a lot of what the H.O.O. was saying. But it sounds like some of you guys have your minds made up because of your dislike for Harrison.

So what do you guys think about the hits on Jackson (Eagles), Heap (Ravens) and the other ones? My take is that the hit on Jackson was absolutely devastating, but not illegal. Same kind of effort you see every week when a defender is trying to make sure the receiver either doesn't catch, or at least doesn't retain the football. Watch Ray Lewis on any given Sunday. That's what he does. Tries to separate the ball from the receiver. And he's lauded as a great linebacker. All you ever hear is, "If you come into Ray Lewis' neighborhood, you'd better be prepared to pay the price!" Then everybody else agrees, "Yeah, Ray's one of the best linebackers to ever play the game."

The hit on Heap? Cheap and dirty. Merriweather made an effort to leap upwards to cause the helmet-to-helmet hit.

Everyone remembers "DIAB", correct?

This has inspired a new name for my 2nd least favorite NFL player:

Mr. DIAT*.

So, everyone, let me introduce you to the man, the myth, the dumb redneck that thinks he's the greatest thing to happen to women, Mister DIAT:

Harrison was only fined for the hit on Mo. The NFL basically said that he shouldn'tve lead with his head on Cribbs, but that nothing illegal happened there. I feel like NFL's stance or not, using your head as a battering ram, and attempting to fit your helmet into another player's earhole is plenty dirty, especially if you act like a thug during your post game interview.

And [DEL]Gard[/DEL] Jeff K, you can't forget that some of us obviously hate the Steelers for things that happened over a year ago, or that we are just sore losers because we lost a month ago. So anyone with the opinion that Harrison plays dirty is obviously biased.

In my opinion this weekends "dirty plays" go Meriweather>Harrison>Robinson. Dunta's hit has by far the most violent, but seemed to have the least dirty intent. He made a play on the ball. Harrison's "hits" are next. 2 consussions inside of 5 minutes just isn't a coincidence to me. He led with his head against Cribbs, and he definitely violated the "defenseless receiver rule" when he decked Mo. And then Meriweather's head shot was by far the dirtiest based on intent.

...er....whaaaa....

I didn't say anything on this topic at all...just made a smart@$$ joke about Mr. DIAT....

Hall looked more and more the part as the game went on.

I sincerely believe he is the QB the Cards need.

The Cards have a very supportive home crowd. Which is why they are 3-2. They got hammered on the road. Let's leave this behind.

Honestly, from what I've seen of James Harrison, if there is a situation where it's not certain whether he was in the right or in the wrong, I'm going to assume he's in the wrong. The guy is a thug, plain and simple.

With the Jackson hit I don't know necessarily if that does or doesn't fall into the defenseless receiver rule or not, which is mostly a judgement call, but I'm going to go and assume (former WR here) that the defenseless receiver rule should have taken effect with that hit.

Heap's hit was dirty, plain and simple, it reminded me of when Rodney Harrison used to play. Merriweather came out though and was the the bigger man and apologized for the hit and said he would try to play within the rules, so I at least need to give him some credit, as opposed to an attention whore who is threatening retiring cause he can't play like a thug anymore.

I'm a steelers fan and haven't played football since grade school, but that looks like a head shot to me.

Cincinnati @ Atlanta - Atlanta.

Jacksonville @ Kansas City - Jacksonville

St. Louis @ Tampa Bay - Tampa. This will of course be blacked out in my area and am hoping the Yucs lose.

Philadelphia @ Tennessee - Philly

Washington @ Chicago - Washington

San Francisco @ Carolina - Tough call because both look bad. Carolina, I guess.

Pittsburgh @ Miami - Pittsburgh

Buffalo @ Baltimore - Baltimore

Arizona @ Seattle - Arizona

New England @ San Diego - Pats

Cleveland @ New Orleans - Saints

Oakland @ Denver -Denver

SNF: Minnesota @ Green Bay - Green Bay. Though I hate the Pack, they will earn some points with me if they can take that douche bag Favre out of the game and end his career.

MNF: NY Giants @ Dallas - Giants.

Nick- I am going to the Cards v. TB game on Halloween! My friend lives in Buckeye & a few of my buddies and I are flying out to AZ on 10/28 for a few days of golf, football and beer. Are you going to the game? (I have adopted AZ as my 2nd fav team for fun- even have a Marcel Shipp jersey!)

Also, any cool music stores you would suggest while I am in the Glendale/ Phoenix area?

Hall is definitely a step up from Leinart or Anderson. Given a few years of not getting the snot knocked out of him (David Carr Syndrome), and a supporting cast, and the Cards may yet again be a threat to do something.

However, he didn't look all that good against the Saints, frankly, and that's not just homerism (although there IS some homerism involved! ;) ) - the facts are the facts: the Cards offense did not score ONE TD all day. All three AZ TD's were on turnovers, two Saints turnovers and one extremely fortunate AZ turnover that bounced right to an offensive lineman. Add to that the sub-200 yards gained stat, and the offense didn't win anything, the defense did a good job of taking advantage of miscues and won.

Congrats on the big win, I'm sure that the entire Saints team would say "you're welcome".

;)
