NHL 2008

All this talk about the Wings winning the cup? Have you seen the way that the Devils are playing since Marty came back? Not to mention that they would have the most points in the league if it wasn't for the stupid "lets give points to losers" rule. With Marty in net, playing better than he ever has (which is something in itself), they are unstoppable.

No, they aren't. The Cup is the Red Wings to lose.

Look, I want with all my heart for my Pens to win the Cup. We had a shot last year, and the Wings demolished us like we were a bunch of junior high school kids playing hockey for the first time.

In the NBA, it is said some teams have an "extra gear" they kick in when the playoffs start. The Wings have that "extra gear", and when they kick it in there is no team in the NHL that can compete with them.

For all the rest of us....enjoy the end of the season and our teams run through the playoffs. Whoever of us gets to the Cup Finals will be dissected by the Wings.

Man, Great game....I love it when we beat the Pens. I saw Stevens employ a little 1-2-2 trap with a 2 goal lead. Trying to be the Pens at their own game (well Theriens game at least).

The other Marty (Biron) looked sharp and really kept the Flyers in the game this time around. Good to see the PP click on those two goals.

The kind of hockey you said you hated and would not want to win playing, or something like that right?

I was out and about on Sunday and totally forgot about the game. I did not get to watch it. I hate losing to the Flyers, so I was bummed. Oh well, we'll beat them in the playoffs again when it matters. :D

Meh...Stevens was only using the trap to protect a fragile lead. It's all coaching tactics. It's one thing to play an entire game that way....certainly another to close out the final minutes of the 3rd period. I've seen teams beat traps...I was just frustrated with that previous game because Philly couldn't.

Now the game against the Devils last night.....that was a thing of beauty. Biron looked sharp and the Power Play clicked but what really impressed me was Philly's PK.....They killed a 4 minute double minor and a couple of lousy delay of game and too many men penalties. They did a great job of limiting the Devils to the perimeter and limiting shots that made it through. The PK actually had a couple of shorthanded opportunities. A great team effort for sure. There was no backing down on the Flyers part....that's the type of hockey I prefer to watch.

Playoffs are Playoffs and a completely different animal. I'm not making any predictions but to say that whoever faces the Flyers in the playoffs are going to have their hands full.

Looks like Wings and SJ are tied at the top now, all even in games played and points, but the Wings have the tiebreaker with most wins. This is going down to the wire.

Thanks for the link. With Darien Hatcher out of the lineup all season and probably retiring at the end of this season...Timmo gives the Flyers young D the leadership and calm that it needs. Their D is very inexperienced but in time can become very capable. Timmo is a guy that they need to hang onto as long as they can. He is calm and collected with the puck...moves it well and seems to always make good decisions with the puck. He is also a good PP "quarterback". That experience trickles down through the locker room and can really teach guys like Parent and Sbisa (when he comes back from the minors).

The Flyers played well against Florida on Thursday but couldn't seem to get the good bounces. Florida ultimately winning the bout. They were up against a stingy goaltender in Craig Anderson. He just wouldn't let anything by.

The Flyers got a character win in the Shootout against an Islander team that outplayed them for 40 minutes. Flyers scored three goals in a span of 4 minutes in the 3rd to take the lead from a 2-0 deficit. NY tied it back up 30 seconds later to force the OT and eventual shootout. Briere and Richards scored in the shootout and Biron emerged as the better goalie in the shootout. Having Briere back helps our chances in the shootout.

It was old time hockey on Long Island with 4 fights. Powe and Weight dropped the gloves in the 1st after a clean hit by Powe. Weight got the extra 2 minute instigator.

Carcillo dropped the gloves against Thompson....Cote took on Rechlicz...and Asham dropped Tim Jackman with a one punch helmet popper. I'll post a vid of that one when it comes up. All three fights in the 2nd period. I'm not sure how I feel about all the fighting....it's entertaining to watch, but the more staged fights seem a little selfish. No bench clearers although it started to take on that edge. The third saw no penalties at all however.

We're staying hot, knocking off the Rangers on Saturday morning. I thought it was a big win since we are battling for playoff position and the Rangers are right there with us. I don't dislike the Rangers all that much, but still happy to send them home losers.

My guy Fedotenko played a big role offensively. I thought Gonchar played a solid game on defense and did a whole bunch of things that helped us win, but will never make the highlight reel. I also think Orpik is solidifying his game now and stepping up into the openings on defense from our recently departed players.

I think Shero is shaping up to be a good GM.

The wings had the suck knob on the mixer cranked this weekend. 5 posts against the Isles and they didn't even show up for the game. The Nashville game they pi$$ed away with a couple of bonehead plays. Chelios took 2 rookie penalties and both resulted in PP goals for the Preds. I hope Lilja's concussion heals in time for the playoffs, as well as Rafalski's groin. Cheli won't be playing in the playoffs at all unless there's injury. As much as I like the guy, it's time for him to hang the skates up and go into coaching. Ericsson is going to be good. Ozzie played pretty well in the pipes in the Isles game, but at least one of the Nash goals was iffy imho. Still, the Lidstrom feed to Zetterberg was a thing of beauty.

As much as I want to say the Wings are going to crank it into full gear come playoffs time, they're starting to give me a few doubts. The number 2 seed is a virtual lock, and maybe they're trying to save themselves a bit for the playoffs, but I'd hate to see them just mail it in and not fight for the top. That said, I'd rather have the cup than the President's Trophy anyway :)

MJ5150 - I ended up caving and ordered a Zetterberg Winter Classic Jersey for the playoffs. Even though it is a bit of a contrived design, the look has grown on me. I figured since my current jerseys all have players either retired or no longer wings (Probert white replica from my college days, Yzerman red replica from the same time, Konstantinov white pro, Fedorov white pro), it was time to update. Side note, if anyone wants a Wings winter classic jersey, they're on sale for $206 shipped including customization and WC patch directly from the wings, 1-888-WINGS-25

Awesome choice. Don't tell anyone, but I ordered a Z earlier this year also. It wasn't the WC one, just a home jersey. I sure didn't pay only $206 for mine tho.

Trivia question........of the NHL's "original six", which two teams have never won 50 games in a season? No searching online either. :)

Good question, beat me to the answer.

I'll be ordering another Zetterberg jersey for my little girl, but I need to find an adult small in stock someplace local so she can try it for size. If it's not ridiculously big for her, she's getting the black practice jersey customized for Zetterberg (I haven't seen it in youth sizes). Otherwise, it'll be a white jersey. The Hull jersey she has now isn't going to fit her next season. (She got it because when she was real little before the lockout, she'd snuggle with me on the sofa to watch games, and I'd carry her up to bed during the intermission. She liked "Bett Hull" (she didn't get the pronunciation of the R down right away), and yelled it whenever he scored and would high five me.

Follow up question: How do you know it's spring in Toronto?

The Leafs are out.

It will NEVER get old. :)
