NHL PLayoffs 2009

Great game tonight! Although I don't know if I'd be saying that if it had gone the other way.;)

I must give it up to the Hawks though, it was a very good game that easily could have gone to the Hawks. Both teams had their moments and with the exception of a cheap 5 on 3 in the first I thought the officiating was OK. Osgood has been the difference so far. Again this has been a much more entertaining series then the series against the Ducks with all of it's "playoff goals". In this series we are seeing both teams skill players actually play.

Wings do it in OT 3-2 by an awesome 3 on 1 breakaway. Chicago looked a lot better in this one but still came up short. Their defense looks much better in the playoffs than it did in the regular season. Samulesson gets the feed from Fillpula and Hudler and sticks it over Khabibulin's shoulder. 10 down, 6 to go!

I can't tell you how many times the shots they were taking were WAY off the mark. They hit the pipes a couple of times but there were wide open shots that Khabibulin just watched go behind him. I don't know if they're tired or what but if half those shots were closer it would have at least created rebound opportunities and I doubt seriously that this game would need to go to OT.

Officiating was ok? Sure I guess. Other than the non-call on Zetterberg pulling a can-opener on a Chicago defenseman, and Franzen diving. The ref actually motioned a dive at Franzen and waved for him to get up. Why no unsportsmanlike call on that?! There were also a bunch of high sticks, hooks and slashes that went undetected (for both teams, but a large number of those didn't get called against Detroit).

In regards to the Zetterberg non-call, Pierre Maguire actually said "that was a respect non-call". ***?! So essentially it was a penalty, but because it was Zetterberg it was ok not to call the penalty? This is why I hate officiating in the NHL. Absolutely no consistency. Something that is a penalty in the regular season doesn't get called in the playoffs. Something that was a penalty in the first period won't get called late in the third in a tie game or in overtime.

As for the game itself, I feel bad for the Blackhawks. They played well, and a couple of mistakes by their defensemen in the offensive zone ended up costing them the game. Its been nice watching them get this far in the playoffs. I don't see them winning 4 of the next 5 games against Detroit, but I can hope. Losing to the Wings in this round will definitely be a good learning experience for them for next season.

Chicago isn't backing down.....good for them. They will still lose the series, but this is an interesting preview of the future. If those guys can all stick together, Detroit is going to have an even tougher time with them next year in the playoffs.

I refer you to my earlier comment about the Hawks.

Hawks remind me of the Oilers a couple of years before they started winning cups - great skill, but don't have the experience to win it all yet (much like Pittsburgh did last year).

Though Babcock made a comment about rooting for their young guys to keep scoring to force the Hawks to blow it up due to the salary cap. If it wasn't for the cap, these Wings and Hawks rosters could create an epic battle in the Central Division for years to come.

I'm glad to see the Hawks bringing it, and again there were some ticky-tack calls BOTH ways (which is to be expected when Devorski refs), though imho it was much more even than in the Wings-Ducks series (note I say more even rather than "good").

Trivia - Lidstrom with his 116th playoff assist passed Steve Yzerman for the all-time lead for playoff assists among Red Wings, and I believe he's 5th all-time now.

Question of the day - $7 mil for Lidstrom or $7 mil for Campbell? The Hawks got burned with that contract.

Finally, I'll say it again, the Hawk who scares me the most is Patrick Sharp, he's always played well against the Wings.

As was the interference call on Holmstrom when he was pushed into the goalie. Also the call on Brad Stuart was a cheapy that led to the Black Hawks first goal. And 5 on 3's should never be awarded cheaply in the playoffs. What I'm saying is that the official were fairly consistent and didn't any team a distinct advantage with their whistles. I said it was OK, I didn't say it was great. Chicago fans certainly can't blame the officials for the lost any more then the Wings can blame the crossbar. The fact of the matter is the teams had about an equal amount of good chances the Wings just new what to do with them better. The Wings also got better goaltending. Osgood stopped a breakaway, Khavabuelin blew two of them.

No one cares about the game last night but me? Bummer.

So VS put up a stat last night after Malkins third goal saying it was the first Penguins playoff hat trick since Straka did it in '99. Ummmm....no, that would be wrong. Crosby had one in the Washington series on the same night AO did. Oh well, we all make mistakes.

I was all prepared to totally dislike the Hurricanes until they flashed up a picture of their bench, and I noticed that one of their assistant coaches is Ron Francis. He is one of my all-time favorite Pens players, and the only Pens player to ever win the Selke. I remember when he left and went to Carolina, I was so sad.

Boo to Carolina for turning into a bunch of punks at the end of that game. They aren't going to beat us by trying to scare us. The bullied Malkin all night, and he scored three times. They tried to race us up and down the ice all night, and they gave up six goals. Not a peep from Eric Staal so far, which is bad, bad news for Carolina. The Pens are playing great defense on him. I wouldn't be surprised is this is over in four games.

Malkin's third goal was a work of art, magnificent.

Not blaming the officials for the loss. I'm just sick and tired of seeing really bad officiating in the playoffs where bad penalties get called, and then more bad penalties get called later as a 'make-up' call instead of calling the blatantly obvious offenses.

Both goalies had similar stats (saves-wise) in game 2, with Khabi giving up one more goal than Osgood. Having played goal for 9 years, those 3 on 1s are ridiculously hard to stop especially if they pass cross ice twice like the Wings did. I would say the blame goes to Campbell and Kane on the OT goal. Campbell for not making a smart play and dumping it down into the corner, and Kane for not backchecking hard to cover Samuelson. Bolland almost caught up to him, but he was way deeper in the Wings zone than Kane, who might've been able to at least lift Samuelson's stick if he put some effort into backchecking.

A bit OT, but here goes: does anyone know an internet tv site or something similar that would show full NHL games? I don't own a TV and much less some huge satellite channel package that would be required to see NHL over here. The local series is long gone and I'm craving for some hockey..

I think you can go to www.nhl.com and find something there. I was looking for that when I couldn't see the Redwings game last week and I saw an advertisement to subscribe to a service where you can watch them online.

Wow....another fairly easy win. Carolina has no answer for Crosby or Malkin. Cam Ward shows flashes of brilliance, but can't hold it together for an entire game. Props to him though, we should have had eight goals tonight.

Question though.......we scored an empty netter of a face off when it was a four on four. How come the penalty did not immediately end right there like it normally does when a goal is scored? Was it because it was not a PP goal?

We seem to be getting hot just at the right time. Maybe we'll have enough to take down Detroit this year.

ESPN.com is reporting that Havlat and Khabibulin are both out for the next game. What a bummer.

I haven't seen the Kronwall hit, but I sure hope he didn't cheap shot the guy. The NHL did not discipline him further than the ejection, but from what I gather, the NHL has been real inconsistent with their playoff discipline.
