NHL PLayoffs 2009

One down, three to go!!!

-Mike

And that's all it might take if my Flyers don't step it up. They didn't even look like they should have been in the same building with the Pens tonight. Passes weren't connecting; they were a step slower than the Pens all night; and Biron did not look good. They just seem to have the Flyers' number.

I think I'd have rather played the Bruins in the first round than the Pens. And that's nothing against the Bruins. They're a great team this year. But we just can't seem to sustain any confidence against the Pens...

It's still early and it is only one game. Still I don't have very much confidence in the Flyers if they continue to play this way. Where is the leadership? Why are the Pens dictating the pace of the game? I think two things are glaring problems on the Flyers....turnovers....lack of faceoff wins. If you know anything about hockey....nuff said. Goaltending was piss poor too. Fluery came to play....Biron...did not.

Wings draw first blood 4-1 reminding the Bluejackets that the regular season and the playoffs are different seasons indeed. Columbus only had 8 shots on goal in the second and third periods. I think the Wings drew a brake finishing second instead of first in the conference. I would rather play Columbus then the Ducks any-day. Less travel, less two am overtime game finishes on pacific time. Plus the Ducks aren't that far removed from a team (06-07) that won the cup. The first round may not be a cakewalk for San Jose, I suspect Detroit wins fairly easily.

Cheechoo imho was the goat for the Sharks last night. Thornton needs to lead on the ice or there'll be some anger in SJ at the series end. That's going to be a hard fought physical series, though I still think the Sharks will prevail in 7.

The way the BJ's were mugging around the net in the first made me think the Ducks had relocated to Columbus. VERY lopsided officiating in the first, but Ozzie was HUGE in net when he needed to be. Stuart had a horrible giveaway but Ozzie made a beauty of a save to bail him out. As long as the wings stay persistent in their end, they'll pull the series out, but Rafalski needs to not be sloppy - the face high chop at a puck was just dumb (and the only warranted call against the wings in the first, especially considering what wasn't called against the jackets). After the midpoint of the second, it was solid clampdown by Detroit. Ericsson is a top 3 d-man on any other team in the league, he's going to be a wing for a LONG time.

The Pens completely dominated the Flyers in their first game, imho. I'm not surprised Carcillo was suspended for a game, since his name isn't Pronger, and the offense was against the Pens :) No place for what seemed to be a butt-end delivered. There was no penalty call, but if it happened that's what should have been sent down. But, following that example of not wanting messages sent after the whistle, what's going to happen in the Bruins-Habs series? While the bit after the empty netter was nowhere near the Hunter hit on Turgeon (I think in '93) during the Isles/Caps series, there's no place for that either.

I didn't see the Calgary/Chicago game, but I was surprised to see the Flames were outhit. I saw a highlight of Keenan's conference where he seemed to be referring to the no-goal in the Dallas cup win. What was up with that?

I had turned the game off before the incident occurred. Butt ending should be a game misconduct. I'm not surprised they didn't call it with only a few seconds left in the game. I'm sure the Van Massenhoven's thought was let the league deal with it. Stevens also fined $10,000. I'd take it out of Carcillo's salary.

They should have, period. It's the ref's job to make that call every time. I don't care what team it is, if a player makes a cheap shot like that which has no place in the game, the misconduct should be called automatically, and supplemental discipline if necessary. Unfortunately, because the league dropped the ball big time in the 2007 playoffs with the Pronger headhunting (TWO suspensions for it in the playoffs) and only throwing 1 game playoff suspensions, their hands are pretty much tied with only throwing the one game. Funny how a dirty player like Pronger who has as many suspensions as one Chris Simon still gets the preferential treatment from the poison dwarf (Bettman) and the NHL office.

As far as taking the fine out of Carcillo's salary, I don't think they can per the collective bargaining agreement. First, the salaries are paid over 82 regular season games, not the playoffs. Second, I think the CBA and the rulebooks specify that that fine is specific to the coach in that situation. I do believe, however, that it's allowed, and is in fact common practice, for the team to pick up the fine.

I like the Pens and Wash but right now am rooting for the Bruins over Montreal.

The Habs played a great second period last night before the Bruins raised their hind leg and drowned them in the third.

The 'Hawks/Flames series looks like a great one, too.

I'm waiting for this years annual Pronger bonehead move.........

Game three,,Patrick Marleau?

Now that would have been a great thing to put on the betting boards at Vegas :hiding: I don't know what to say, but for sake of irony, I'll say Claude Lemieux facefirst into the dasher in game 4 requiring the exact amount of surgery/rehab that Draper needed a few years back. He'd STILL deserve the suspension for it though.
