NHL PLayoffs 2009

Oh, please. The Flyers dominated last night's game. The Pens were able to steal a victory because they had the better goaltender, not because they out-skated the Flyers.

Quoted for truth. Fleury was VERY good in the crease.

Congrats to the Canucks for their 1st ever sweep in a 7 game series as a franchise. Luongo is going to be a challenge to whoever faces him.

The Sharks turned it up a notch to make the series 2-1. Regardless of who wins, I'm hoping it's a 7 game war of attrition.

The Canes goal was good - Brodeur was out of the crease, end of story. If anything, I think Marty may have been trying to draw a penalty for the start of OT.

Interesting quote from the Columbus Dispatch the other day regarding the Wings/B-J's series:
Those Red Wings played hard. These Wings play as if beating the Jackets is their last chance to save humanity.
. Here's a link to the article [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

The Wings' early score was huge last night, and they took it to the Jackets until late in the 3rd when they got sloppy and seemed to go on autopilot a bit. Multiple failed clearing attempts led to the Jackets goal, but you've got to give huge props to Umberger for coming back from a hit like that to score one. The Stuart hit was a clean one that would have made Scott Stevens proud. Mike Commodore was the goat for the 3rd goal big time. He missed Cleary and landed in the Wings bench, then goes after Franzen behind the goal line, punched him in the head, then cross checked him when he was down. Mule kicked the puck to Cleary, who dished it to Zetterberg for the goal. Personally, I STILL think Commodore should be wearing number 64 on his jersey :)

Look....I'm older and slower than most of the guys I play sports with these days. The only chance I got against some guys is to get real physical with them and try to take them off their game. I can't match them on speed and quickness anymore, so I'll get a little more physical and rough a guy up a bit to try and equalize the talent. I see the Flyers doing the same thing....they are not as fast or quick as the Pens. The only chance they got is to play rough and take some shots here and there and hope the refs don't see it. Well, the refs are watching. Sorry bro....your own team created the reputation, now deal with it.

Ya know that Seinfeld episode where George was talking to a clown about Bozo the Clown...and the clown had no clue who Bozo was? George was in total disbelief. Eventually, the clowned got P'd off & told George "You're stuck in the '70s, man"!
Well, Mike...what you yapping about above-

YOU'RE STUCK IN THE '70s, MAN!!!

:smug:

I don't know, man. As I watched, I thought "Pittsburgh is playing one nice road game".
Then, on the way in this morning, I hear Fleury had 45 saves?!? Huh? That was about the most quiet 46 shots I can recall.
FWIW, it seems Philly always has to work 2x as hard to get a goal...though maybe that's 'cause I'm a fan of the team.

I realize that, and I even said as much. They didn't quite dominate as much as they needed to, as you mentioned. The Pens had the better goalie, and that was the only reason we won last night.

That game should have been 6-2 or 7-2 in favor of the Flyers.

PS....This is supposed to be a light hearted thread so sorry if that (or this) post offended you....It's just a game.

Hoy, I'm not going to get offended for anyone sharing their views of their team here or anywhere else. I wasn't trying to be a smartA$$ either, not that you insinuated that. The Kunitz hit? Yeah, it was a stupid attempt at hurting the guy, especially as high as he went when he hit him. I don't condone that kinda stuff. My basic point was, in game one and two, Philly seemed to be taking alot of stupid penalties, after the whistle? That gets really old fast with me. Save your energy for the game, whistle to whistle. It seemed to me that they were playing "goon" hockey taking cheap shots and generally playing stupid. You want to talk about trying to hurt or being a goon? How about the head shot on Talbot with seconds left in the game during the faceoff? Stupid goon lunkhead hockey.
Like I said, not trying to be a smarta$$, just stating my opinion like most others here are doing.

Boston will not be impossible to beat unless New-York makes as many glaring mistakes as the Habs did during the serie: they took way too many penalties in Boston and turnovers were behind 75% of the goals scored against in Montreal.

Seriously, with Lang, Tanguay, Markov, Schneider and Bouillon out, Price pretty much out of his game and Gainey making appaling coaching decision after appaling coaching decisions (Laraque's stint with the first trio cost us the first game of the series, shuffling players around), it's a surprise every game wasn't won by 3 or 4 goals minimum.

The Habs dominated the first 15-20 minutes of every game, but weak goals, turnovers and penalties made it an uphill battle or a tied game at the first intermission every night. We were even able to get physical with the Bruins ! If you guys can limit defensive errors and time in the box (looking at you Avery), Boston will be tough, but very, very much beatable since they looked flat a huge portion of the games.

I agree that there is no justification for that hit. But I'm glad you raised it, because it is the perfect example of the league's inconsistency when it comes to the Flyers. Mike Cammalleri of the Flames did the exact same thing and did not get a suspension. You can see it here: Invalid Link Removed

After the lockout and the Bertuzzi incident, the league seemed to really want to tackle the issue of intentional attempts to injure head on by calling more penalties and reviewing incidents. But now, the big cheeses are still spinning their wheels and handing on candy match suspensions.

Sorry, but hitting an opponent at a faceoff or breaking your stick on their face doesn't merit a 5 minute or a 1 game suspension, even if it's the playoffs. Start at 5 games and see who still acts as jackasses.

And the rules for penalties after the whistle needs to be rewritten, badly. It leads to all kind of stupid hijinks: guy A suckerpunches an opponent from behind, guys B, C and D from other team pile on him. Each team gets 2. Same scenario but guy B from other team just run his mouth. Gets 2 also.

Wait, what ? Does this make any sense to anybody ?

So how about the Blackhawks being screwed over by the refs this series? First it was the non-call on Phaneufs high stick on Bolland (or Brouwer, forget who), which would've been 4 minutes. Instead, no call and the Flames score to make it 3-1 (in game 3). Then Eager gets tripped up in the Flames zone. Again no call and Moss scores to make it 4-1 roughly 45 seconds later. And once more last night with the hand pass, where Nystrom ends up scoring seconds later.

I'm not saying the 'hawks played well enough and deserved to win both those games, but the refs sure aren't making it easy on them.

I didn't think I offended you....just a preemptive "simmer down chainsaw". ;)

I think that the 1st hit on Timo by Kunitz is what has set the tone for this series. I think Kunitz was trying to make a statement and in a round about way that statement was probably "I'm going to injure your #1 D-man".

My basic point was, in game one and two, Philly seemed to be taking alot of stupid penalties, after the whistle? That gets really old fast with me. Save your energy for the game, whistle to whistle.
I love what goes on after the whistle, but that's just me. It's the games within the games that I love.

It seemed to me that they were playing "goon" hockey taking cheap shots and generally playing stupid. You want to talk about trying to hurt or being a goon? How about the head shot on Talbot with seconds left in the game during the faceoff? Stupid goon lunkhead hockey.

In which case Carcillo was suspended a game and Stevens was fined $10,000....I don't think there was any intent to injure.

I saw the shot recently, but before that, I thought it sounded like a butt ending which is unacceptable hockey. It really looked to me like a pop to the back of Max's helmet more than anything else. I agree it was a cheapshot...which I also don't condone....but the league made it out to be more than it was. They made an example out of the Flyers....which the league will do at any and every opportunity.

Mike...I was wondering when you were going to chime in....I don't know what to say about reputation....I wish it was a level playing field (or Ice Surface) out there but it isn't.

Let's face it....this is a rivalry...Pens fans hate the Flyers and Flyers fans hate Sidney Crosby....that's all there is to it.

As for tonight...I've got a gig...so I'll miss the end to the Flyers season.

I totally agree with Ray Ferraro's opinion in that video. The league should not take action on whether or not the player was injured or not but on the action of the offending player. The elbows that each player threw were premeditated and not part of the game. I know playoff hockey is about the most intense any sport can get but someone's got to put their foot down and not be biased.

That`s all I had to say ...

Oh, and that we came to the conclusion that Montrealers were so disappointed of the quick elimination because they aren`t used to have to start talking again to their wives so early in spring, the vacation was short this year :D

edit : Adding a woo for the canucks.
