NHL PLayoffs 2009

Wings dominated the B-J's in the 1st 2 periods. Missed the 3rd for a gig, but apparently the Jackets went the undisciplined route. I still think Mason is going to steal one at home, and that the Wings might get lazy when they go up 3-1, but if it's quicker, I won't complain. The Wings definitely seem to have found the "on switch". Pavs had a hysterical quote after being tackled by Vermette. From mlive.com"

Datsyuk nobody's horse
Pavel Datsyuk, a three-time Lady Byng Trophy winner for sportsmanship and gentlemanly play, could only take so much abuse. He finally lost his cool when Antoine Vermette shoved him from behind in the third period and tried to jump him near the Blue Jackets net.

"I think he just used me like pony, he just got on top of me," Datsyuk said. "He almost took off my jersey."

Datsyuk said he doesn't want anyone riding him.

"No, no. I don't want to be the pony," he said. "I want to be on top."

Mitch Albom had a really nice article about Pavs in the freep on Friday (yes he went a bit Tuesdays with Morrie, and he uses "I" in his interviews way too much, but it's the best article he's written in years, imho). It gave some really nice insight into Datsyuk.

The Sharks being down 2-0 surprises me. What's more surprising is the 0-for on the power play. I still think it's going to be the Sharks in 7, but it's not going to be an easy series either way. The way the Ducks take dumb penalties, it's only a matter of time before the Sharks start clicking, unless there's something I'm missing by not staying up late. Anyone care to elaborate?

Flyers-Pens. Flyers started out very sloppy, but got the early goal, then opened it up. Lots of hitting. The 2nd Flyers goal on the PP was a miscalled penalty - Staal took a stick in the face 3 times then was called for a hold. Still, the Flyers took it to the Pens physically, though I'll say the Pens hit on Timonen was a clean hit, though in fairness to Timonen, he was trying to fight off another player and had no chance. The Flyers need to stay chippy to win this series. Claude Giroux had an AWESOME game.

Vancouver/St. Louis - haven't seen any of the games, but the Nucks are starting to look a bit scary. Calgary/Chicago - Chicago's young guns are holding up well in their first playoffs against a Flames team that's depleted on D. Biggest surprise: Havlat is still healthy :)

Devils/Hurricanes - didn't see the game, but apparently Brodeur is on the cusp of another record - 1 more OT loss in the playoffs and he'll have the record for most OT losses.

Bruins/Montreal - Sorry to the Habs fans, but imho you can stick a fork in them. The Lucic suspension seems to be a "cool your jets" warning from the poison dwarf and his cronies, but it won't stop the Bruins.

Good stuff, San Jose reminds me of the Wings of the 94 and 95 seasons who lost to the Avalanche and Devils. The Wings won the Presidents trophy in 94, and (I don't remember) were probably in the top three in 95, but they weren't built for the playoffs. They had a great offensive defensman in Paul Coffey who was a liability on defense, none of their forwards worked hard on the defensive end. Consequently they piled up great regular season statistics but didn't play near as well in the "smaller ice" situations you get in the playoffs when the odd man rushes are much harder to come by.

Now, you watch the Wings you see forwards that are committed to defense first, Zettenberg and Datsyk are in the running for the Selke every year. Hosa's not bad either. It's rare to see a RW forward get turned around on an odd man rush.

The other thing is not being afraid to give up your body to win the cup. Look at the play where Brad Stuart dived to stop a breakaway. That's a play he doesn't make during the season, because he's not giving up his body for the Presidents trophy. I wasn't worried about the best record thing, because many of these players had been around the 01-02 team which won the cup easily and didn't win the Presidents trophy. The Wings have built a foundation of players that know what it takes to win a cup with a coach that gets it. Remember this team probably would have won two years ago had their top three defensemen not gone down before the conference finals against Anaheim.

As I said earlier I was glad we drew Columbus over Anaheim. Number two has it's advantages. I was reminded of that again last night when I went to bed at 1:15 AM after watching the San Jose game. San Jose can still win IF they can regain the confidence that their offense will come thru if they stay at it, and IF they can remain confident enough to take some chances in front of Nabakov, and IF they don't get the previous San Jose playoff failures in their heads. I suspect their fans (judging from the boos last night) have already given up.

HAHAHAHAHA

Found this fun

Good read. Thanks for the post. GO WINGS

Well, I'm late...and the way the Flyers finished the Regular season by losing 6 of their last 10 + the last game debacle agianst the Rangers...it's a wonder I'm in here at all.

Friday night was a collapse...good teams don't give it away in the last 3 miunutes of a Playoff Game. OK, yesterday, they showed a pulse. I'll give them that.

What's up wawick.hoy? Miss me?
;)

I honestly expected to see the B's drop this one. The Hab's came out rocking!

3-0.:bassist:

Well they did come out a little flat and had to weather the storm from the Habs for the first 10 minutes of that first period and even went down a goal. But that was all she wrote. The Bruin's REALLY put it to the Habs in that 3rd period. Up 3-2, in the Bell Centre, and they held the Habs to only 5 shots on goal in that 3rd period. Wait 'till the B's really steamroller them on Wednesday....with Lucic. Byron Bitz played a great game. Tim Thomas is a god in Finland from when he played there and now the rest of the world knows why. GO BRUINS!!! :D )-(

I agree with you but I can't count how many times the Flyers have been scored on on the penalty kill because of a botched call. It is rare that the Flyers are on the good side of a bad call. No one will say it....but the Flyers are held to a different standard when it comes to penalties.

Still, the Flyers took it to the Pens physically, though I'll say the Pens hit on Timonen was a clean hit, though in fairness to Timonen, he was trying to fight off another player and had no chance.

Kunitz has been trying to take off Timonen's head this whole series. That hit may have been clean but I think it was a cheap shot, and IMO attempt to injure. He got away with it because he's a Penguin. I won't say that the Flyers aren't guilty of cheap shots the only difference being that the Flyers always get called for them. I liked Kunitz when he was in Anaheim for their cup win....now that he is a Penguin....We've got his number.

The Flyers need to stay chippy to win this series. Claude Giroux had an AWESOME game.

Claude Giroux is quickly becoming my favorite Flyer. He came of age quick after Friday nights game where he got the slash in overtime while on the PK. The one that eventually led to Billy Guerin's goal. His pass to Gagne for the SH goal was unbelievable. Fluery should have had that pass. Fluery was off his game a bit I'd say.

Jim...where ya been...

I think the Flyers showed way more than a pulse on Sunday. I agree that good teams don't cave in the playoffs. I think the Flyers had a must win and played with a sense of urgency. They need to keep it that way.

I think Stevens is finally figuring out what he needs to do, and what matchups he wants. I thought the Carter line did well against the Crosby line. I don't like Kunitz trying to injure Timonen all series long but I guess that's how goons play.

I'm sure the Pens are going to bring it tonight. Flyers have to be ready for it.
