NHL Season 2021

Hockey Day In America yesterday. Nice concept, but unnecessarily over-the-top, especially with the Patrick Kane love-fest. Sure, no argument he's one of the best, but c'mon, spread it around a little.
I watched most of the games, and was quite surprised at the defensive gem between Boston & New Jersey. Good game for the hockey fan with no horse in that race. Both goaltenders played lights-out.
Tom Wilson's 7-game suspension is somewhat surprising. Look, I hate that guy as much as anybody, but even I thought his hit on Carlo was not as bad as the result, exacerbated by Carlo being in a vulnerable position. Not defending that POS, because he gets away with more questionable and dirty stuff than most, but I figured he'd get off with 2 games max, if anything.

While trying to be as objective as possible, I believe the 7 game suspension was appropriate considering what I can infer about Wilson's intent.
He deliberately hit a vulnerable player in the head with his elbow causing him to slam his head into the glass. It would have been easier to hit shoulder to shoulder but Wilson chose to raise his arm and go for the head.
That's not an accident. It's a viscous attempt to inflict damage on another player and it's contrary to the spirit of the game that includes violent impact as part of regular play.
Many of my non-hockey-fan friends say the "violence" is why they don't watch the game. Never mind that every play in (American) football is more violent than the average entire hockey game. You just don't see it in the pile up, whereas each hit on the ice is very visible.
That said, Wilson's been on 'thin ice' due to his past transgressions. I s'pose he'll appeal but the coaching staff might wanna kinda sit on him-like Coach Q and staff have done with Gudas this year. He still plays hard, fights if it's needed, but plays more within the rules and spirit of the game.

NBC to shut down NBCSN by end of 2021
NHL to shift back to ESPN next season, where it's been treated like the proverbial red-headed stepchild since the 90s. The early years ('79-'90) ESPN was great, but after that it was pretty lousy coverage. IMHO, NBCSN is about as good as it comes with its NHL coverage. Hate to see the network fold.
This also affects my Premier League viewing, as I'm a big fan of English football. Article says all content will transfer to USA Network, but I don't see it lasting long there.

Bruins have played a ton, even winning a few except last night against the Islanders.

I have no interest in paying for streaming, which I don't do/use, to get[stuff] I'm already paying too much for on cable.

Ain't that the truth. I thought Tom Mees was great. And Thorne was no slouch. Last Orioles feed I saw/heard(been awhile), Thorne was doing the PBP.

If ESPN were smart they'd bring over Kathryn Tappen along with Patrick Sharp and Keith Jones and a few others. The NBCSN crew is as knowledgeable as any team on the NHL Network.
And yes, Tom Mees was exactly who I had in mind when talking about the early days of ESPN coverage. Guy set the bar pretty high...not matched by many since.

Not to pick on a young guy, but has there ever been a #1 overall pick who has been as invisible as Lafreniere? I understand this season has its own set of unusual circumstances, but once the puck drops it's all the same.
I'm going as far back as '99 when Atlanta selected Stefan as the last 'bust' at #1. (Yakupov in 2012 deserves honorable mention.) Way too early to call Lafreniere a bust but with his skill set seven points in 24 games is definitely cause for concern.

Since I can't even stand on skates, the fact these guys can do what they do never ceases to astound me.
