NHL Season 2022-23

Marchand who and McAvoy who? Bruins looked very good against the Caps last night even without those two stars. Or maybe the Caps were just playing so terribly it made Boston look that good. Either way, it's a great day when Washington loses AND Ovechkin is kept off the scoresheet.
Pens came out of the gate smokin', up 3-0 after about five minutes into the game against the Coyotes. Yeah, we knew the 'yotes are gonna be awful this season, and they pretty much were, but they didn't give up and actually scored a couple PP goals.
Hoping the Pens oldsters can continue what we saw last night. First period especially looked like the Cup teams from '16-'17 with the speed and skill gameplan.

As a Flyer's fan I'm going to allow myself to enjoy the two wins against two teams that aren't really that good. There are 80 more of these games to play and as it stands, the Flyer's lack any high end talent and while they technically have a backup goaltender, I don't have high hopes for any of them. I'm preparing for this team to show us what they really are when the play the Colorados, Tampa Bays, and Carolinas of the league.
Some of these kids look decent which I think is something to hang their hats on. I guess with the easy games, we won't be seeing any Konecny goal droughts to start the season, which is good.
Tort's seems to be getting buy in from his players. At this point I can't pay too much attention to anything other than highlights (I'm a Photo Major in college. Decided to get educated at the ripe age of 43) but what I'm noticing is push back and not withering. Push back in the form of protecting the blue paint, whereas in years past players seemed more passive. On the other end it seems like they are getting in the opposing goalies paint and while that comes with a price, it's nice to see.
They went down two goals in the Canuckleheads game but stuck to the game plan. That's been refreshing given the past 15 years.
I'll be surprised if the Flyers make it to the playoffs this year and I'm torn. On one hand, the Flyers need to hit rock bottom so they can draft well and rebuild. Middle of the road isn't going to get them there.
On the other hand, The Flyerverse is probably not gonna tolerate much more of a lackluster on ice product.

Coyotes take a 3-2 lead with about 90 seconds left. Oh boy! But wait, the Leafs tie it up shortly thereafter, looks like we're heading to OT.
But wait again...the NHL Situation Room calls down and says not so fast, and after a several minute delay, they rule that there was an illegal hand pass in the offensive zone, and the Toronto goal is disallowed. Can't believe a call like that went in the Yotes' favor. Win #1 is in the books. Who'da thunk?

The Yotes have beaten the Leafs consistently here in Toronto for a number of years. Nothng special here, just "Stupid Leafs".

Couldn't find that statistic but I did find one (Toronto Sun) that says the Yotes are 10-4-2 at ScotiaBank Arena. That's a .687 winning pct.
Perhaps they can arrange to play their home games at SBA instead of that college arena.
The Red Wings are looking like a completely different team, based on a handful of games. Thanks to Steve Yzerman for off-season deals for veterans, and some prospects that have panned out.
Flyers fall back to Earth tonight falling 4-3 to the Panthers after starting the season 3-0. Once again, Philly was down 0-2 and came back to tie it up; but they couldn't pull out the victory this time.
I've been quiet about the Flyers. I wanted to see if Tort works as nice with the team as it does on an Oly white bass. I see a difference in their physical play already. That's something this old Broad Street Bullies guy can get behind. Now, if they would only get more shots on goal . . . Seems Tort didn't forget much as E$PN. We'll see.

Yeah, our time is coming too in a few years. Once the Big 3 retire, I got a feeling my Pens will be in the doldrums for a while. With Rutherford mortgaging the future for those couple of Cups, our farm system has been depleted with very few 'can't miss' prospects in the ranks. I'm not so sure. The winning culture you've had for so long will carry over in the locker room for awhile even after the Big 3 retire or move on. After the Flyer won their 2nd of back-to-back Cups in '75, they remained highly competitive for quite awhile. But now, the culture has changed. Almost like they're expected to lose.
I will say though, Torts at least has them playing hard out there even though it's gonna' be another tough year.
As much as I hate to say it, I agree with Jeff. The Pens have some sorta secret sauce.
