NHL Season 2022-23

Kyle Dubas, if you have any sense you will not trade for Erik Karlsson. Sure, he's flashy, but he's not the kind of defenseman the Pens need. Dig into his stats as a defensemen and you'll see what I mean.
Please don't do it.

Yeah, at first I was on board with bringing him in. Then I remembered I never liked that guy, and that he doesn't play defense. Besides, we already have Letang as the PP quarterback, and he logs 25 minutes a night. EK in the mix would upset the balance more than help it. If we had some good shut-down d-men already, then fine, but they need actual defensive players in front of Jarry. Unless they can jettison Granlund's contract in the deal and SJ retains a sizeable chunk of EK's salary, then no thanks.

Matt Murray out indefinitely on Long Term Injured List. That frees up 4.6 mil that the Leafs need to make the cap. It's pretty hush hush as to what is ailing him, given that he was declared available during last years playoffs.
Speculation is that the medical folks told him too many hits to the head and avoid contact sports.

Marooned on Robidas Island....

Wow, kudos to GM Dubas in Pittsburgh. Not only did he land the Norris Trophy winner coming off a 100-pt season, but he jettisoned ALL of the bloated contracts they were trying to unload anyway. (Other than Jeff Carter, but he's a special situation due to his over-35 status).

Kind of bummed there wasn't much salary retention by the Sharks (only $1.5M), and the Pens had to retain about the same amount of Petry's contract. But the Pens would have had to add sweeteners to any deals to offload those three (Petry, Granlund, and Ruuta), so overall, I'm happy with the deal. Undoing a lot of the damage incurred by numbnuts Hextall in one fell swoop.

Was on the fence about acquiring him, but when I saw the particulars of the deal, I was pleasantly surprised.

Agreed mostly with you @dwm74. I have to view this deal from the standpoint of roster cleanup since we certainly did not acquire a genuine defenseman in this deal. In that context, Dubas did indeed do quite well.
Karlsson is for sure good at what he does though.
I do though like the aggressive move to try and make one more run before Crosby, Malkin, and Letang ride off into the sunset. It's been six years since the Penguins won a playoff series. We'll see if this move works to fix that.
