At first glance it does appear that he's made some bad decisions, and nobody is saying he hasn't. But as the linked article explains, he's also made some pretty shrewd moves as well, receiving futures and journeymen he can flip for more mid-round picks. We're all sorely disappointed in the Jarry and Graves contracts, but there have been a fair number of minor deals that are in the positive column (Tomasino, Lizotte). Unfortunately the bad ones are major $$ deals which we're stuck with for a few more years. Overall, not ready to call for Dubas' departure as of yet. But I think this summer will be a make-or-break offseason for him.

It's beyond a 'slump'...he's been borderline awful for most of the past two seasons. Maybe they can send down the rest of the defensive corp, too.

Problem with bringing up Blomqvist is he'll be shellacked, and that's not good for a rookie's confidence or development.

I think the Pens are going to have to blow it up and start a re-build. That's going to be difficult with those two huge contracts for aging defencemen who are under performing. Looking at that from Sid's point of view, it's not something that he likely wants to do, so yah, this off season will be really interesting for the Pens!

It's a Pittsburgh problem, hanging on to aging starts past their prime to appease fans who cling to the 'good lol days', well except for the baseball team.
As the joke goes.... It takes 10 Steeler/Pens fans to change a lightbulb. One to do it and the other nine to talk about how great the light bulb used to be.
Because the fans are nostalgic for the days gone by of their superstars, it leaves little financial motivation for ownership to make major changes. A splash signing here and there, or like JR with trades and moves weekly, that keeps the fans coming and gives them the idea the team is really trying to get back to a championship. In reality, that ship has sailed and these now old superstar players have zero chance anymore of getting the team a championship. But ssshhhh, don't tell the fans that or trade/cut those guys, they'll get mad.

You know Mike I don't watch many these days. Listen to some, Ticker the others.

I watch some tv, but only right before bed

I have to have some time to play bass somewhere

Props to Alex Nedeljkovic for becoming the first NHL goalie to have both a goal and an assist in the same game. He did sort of a Lambeau Leap on the bench after the goal.

Yep, Carolina lands the biggest fish two years in a row. Last year was Guentzel, who ended up not re-signing with the Canes. No idea how Rantanen feels about life in Raleigh, but I have a feeling he'll be testing the Free Agency waters, especially with the cap increasing.

Mixed feelings for the Avs...it didn't seem that he'd accept anything below $14M, while the team wasn't going to go over $12.6M, so they did what it had to do and still got a decent return for an upcoming UFA rather than letting him walk. No 1st rd pick involved, but two quality players who can contribute every night.

Short term winner: Canes.
Long term winner: Avs.

There's some stuff out there on social media, criticizing the trade, including Mikko saying he didn't see it coming

But I look at it this way. Including all the stuff you said above, he was almost impossible to sign five years ago when his contract was up then he basically held out in for all intensive purposes, was trying to blackmail the team into getting more money and at the time he got paid more than MacKinnon

Mikko also said he was not willing to discuss finances during the season, but he did not sign an extension at the end of last year either. So he pushed the team in the position of paying him 14 million or taking 100% loss at the end of the year. He gambled, and a franchise made a decision to get the most out of him, which I think they probably did. He saw this coming.

The Colorado has made the decision that they're going to pay MacKinnon and Makar. Sometimes I hate the sports business, you have to just kind of take it in stride if you wanna watch, or don't be a fan.

And now Mikko is doing damage control, saying he would have taken a discount to stay with the Avs. I bet that's news to McFarland. Everything I'd read prior to the trade said he wasn't budging from $14M, nothing less.

He can always re-sign with Colorado in the off-season if he doesn't sign with Carolina before then. We'll see how much of a discount he'll take at that time.

In a matchup of two of the worst teams in the league, San Jose holds on for a 2-1 win over the Penguins.

Pens are 2-23-2 when trailing after two periods this season...pitiful.

Even a marquee player like Sidney Crosby and the return of Erik Karlsson to San Jose couldn't get the fans to come out...the arena was only roughly half full despite the announced crowd of 11,000+. Whole lotta no-shows.
