NHL Season 2024-25

Here in Ottawa (and Canada in general) it's usually other way around. Hockey 24/7/365. I just watched the Senators give away a game to Vegas, and now watching the #CFL Ottawa REDBLACKS home game vs Hamilton on TSN
Got tickets for next Saturday....ARRGGGOOOOSSS!
I love it!! I would've been at the REDBLACKS game last night had it not been for the worst case of GOUT in my right foot - unable to put weight on it so bad!! FANTASTIC, that'll be a very good East Semi-Final game!!! I reckon the Argos and Chad Kelly will make mince meat out of my Ottawa team. The Argos are looking great - peaking at the right time. I actually have Argos playing in #GreyCup111 vs Saskatchewan RR. ARRRgooooooooossss....erm I mean let's go #REDBLACKS....

Leafs lose in OT to Bruins....where have I seen that before? Stupid Leafs.
I watched part of the game on NHL Network. I thought-for awhile-they were gonna make you happy, but no-o-o.
Well the Jets are still undefeated and the Sharks, well, they're not
I had about written the Avs off after 4 games. Then they won 4 in a row. A win tonight would tie them for fourth in the Central. I feel much better now.
Well I finally figured out why. Flipping through channels over the weekend, I happened to find the Golden Knights being telecast on one of our local channels. Never thought we'd become a Vegas 'suburb' but if it gives me more hockey, then so be it.
I've kind of mentally divorced myself from the Coyotes/Utah Hockey Club. Although I wish the boys well in Salt Lake City, I no longer have any allegiance toward that franchise despite being a Yotes fan for their entire time here.
As far as VGK, I rooted for them at first, then against them for several years, but now I guess they'll grow on me since I'll likely be watching them often. Kind of like how I became a fan of the LA Kings back in the Prime Ticket days (late 80s/early 90s). Watch a team often enough and you slowly become a fan.
Feels weird that Vegas already has been around long enough that you can root against them for several years, but yeah... it's been enough time.
Never understood the allure of The Original Six. A cyber-buddy of mine is a huge Red Wings fans, so I hear him mention it quite a lot as if it were a religious doctrine.
Don't get me wrong, I tend to be a traditionalist in many regards. Yeah, I get the nostalgia and mystique of Les Canadiens, old time Leafs, etc., but the fact of the matter is Original Six were around for 50 years, 1917-1967. In 1967-68, the league doubled, then added a few teams here and there throughout the 70s. So it's been nearly 60 years of NOT (just) the original six. I could see if there were still some connection to the past other than name only, but no players or any personnel from that era are around anymore. Most of those teams have moved into at least one or more arenas since then, so even those famous and hallowed grounds are no longer. Basically the historic accounts of long ago rivalries are all that's left, but today that means very little to anyone under the age of 65. My point is does anyone think that Connor Bedard or Nick Suzuki or David Pastrnak spend one minute thinking about their teams' historic pasts when playing each other? Highly doubtful.

Well, if your team has not won a damn thing since the last year of the Original 6, you might find yourself pining for those days....
It's cool to make references to Original Six but it was an extremely uncompetitive era due to the seriously outsized control of old man Norris and the ironclad control owners had over players. The NHL has a lot of history and it's always good to honor it when appropriate but not all of it good. It's hard enough to compete with the NFL and NBA without intentionally shooting themselves in the foot over a concept that a very small portion of their fan base understands let alone appreciates, IMO. Hey, how about we don't go nearly as far back and just have a day where only teams with rosters exclusively composed of North American players compete? No? How about Wooden Hockey Stick and No Helmet Day (with no masks allowed for goalies)? I mean who doesn't want to see a day where all of the NHL honors Glenn Hall by dressing like him (I mean other than the actual goalies, of course)? With the sponsorships on the uni's these days they could probably rake in some big bucks tying up with the North American Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Association! You just know Bettman would be chomping at the bit for that kind of action.
No doubt there's a huge fan base that's longing to bring back the whistle for 2-line passes. I know when I'm watching a game with a friend and one of us needs to hit the head we're like "You know, there used to be a LOT more stoppage in play - this flying up and down the ice thing is really playing hell with my bladder!".
(I'm being satirical for anyone that might make the mistake of taking me at face value. I once made a cowboy hat joke here without enough/any smiley faces and hoo boy did that not go over well so just putting that out there in advance!)
