Nice Spectors

Love seeing pics of Doug Wimbish's OG 1987 SpectorView attachment 4649679

That is some real mojo. I was never wild about Doug's music but his Spector bass is one of the most amazing looking out there. There is one lucky guy on Basschat who owns an NS-2 from the same run as Doug's main bass (I believe they were used on some promotional material IIRC, maybe the Spector string packets). It has the same incredible '3D' style quilt maple.

Here's the real question: Spector NS or Warwick Corvette?

Depends on your budget. If you can afford the Spector then that’s the better choice by far. But a used ns2 is like 3-4x the price of a used corvette.

I’ve owned both in the past. I own 0 Warwicks now, 3 ns2s and 3 fortes.

This Warwick Broadneck Streamer is $3,399, so it certainly would be as much as a used American Spector and more than a used Euro Spector. That said, they do show up cheaper at times.
That’s a nice looking ‘wick. The thing to look for are either the Spector Forte 5’s or the NS-5H2’s with the Wide5 spacing. I got my Forte 5W (19mm spacing) a few years ago for $2400 (see picture, might be worth more now), definitely more affordable than say a NS-5XL.

I loved Living Colour since discovering them in my early teens, and both Muzz Skillings and Doug Wimbish are awesome players.

It was through Wimbish that I discovered Spector Basses, although he also played Warwick Streamers at the time, and I was rather surprised to see him get an endorsement deal with Ibanez in 2001 and a Signature model to go with that.

I saw them in 2002 on their "Kaleidoscope" tour, and was curious about those Ibanez basses. For some reason they had no road crew, they built up their gear themselves. Wimbish brought four hard cases onto the stage and out came:
- His orange Spector 4 string
And I went, "Yeah, well that has been his main bass for so long already, it would be crazy for him to leave it at home."
- His blue Spector five string
Again, a bass I was familiar with him using.
- A black Spector Fretless
Yeah, there was a pattern forming here...
- A Spector six string

NO Ibanez basses to be found at which I went, "Well, there's something not right with those if he's contractually obliged to play them but doesn't do so."

These days, Wimbish STILL plays his Spectors, the fact that he had several Ibanez Signature models has been forgotten by seemingly everybody.

You’re talking about @BritBass 2. He’s a member here. It’s possibly the most beautiful quilted top I’ve ever seen. Yes, his avatar is the bass he owns. If he ever puts that bass up for sale, it’s mine! ;)

Are the electronics close enough to get a Corvette to sound like an NS? Queensryche's Empire album comes to mind when I drool over Spector tone.

no..I have both Spector Euro and Corvette...they do not sound a like. You want the Queensryche tone...get a Spector

Beastie is right. I have Streamers, Thumb, Euro P Spector. Not really alike at all.

It wasn’t until I recorded my Euro 77LE the other week and heard it direct with no amp sim, no nothing and I realized just what the HAZ preamp really truly sounds like. I had no idea it added so much peach fuzz up top. ‘Wick MEC is just clean and bright.

Couldn't we just rob a couple of useless politicians and get us all 1 or 2 Spectors? This thread isn't good for my GAS problem.
I blame the good Doctor. You would think by now I would know better than to click on his posts as it's sure to cause ridiculous amounts of GAS! :D

Can you give me a ballpark price of a basic Forte 5 with 19mm string spacing? When I finish paying off a few things, maybe I can take the plunge.
Unfortunately, I think since Korg took over Spector they discontinued the Forte models. I could be wrong, but there was something about that here on the forums a few months ago. I would keep an eye out for something used, they don’t come along often (with that spacing), but occasionally something will pop up.

They are still on their website, but the website might not be up to date either.

Thanks. Just spent the last hour lookin' at Spector basses on Sweetwater. Beautiful they are. I'd still want as much as a rehearsal/live gig to really be sold on how well they'd fit overall.

I have no doubt I could make one work. I have reliable stuff now but, yeah, they're beautiful instruments. Especially the Euro's. I've not ever had a zeal for the PJ config and those are quite spendy.
