Nitro finishes and stands

Has anyone had issues with nitro finishes being stained or discolored from sitting on guitar stands? I had to have two of my instruments buffed out to remove these marks. Any solutions to this problem?

No but for a few weeks I didn't notice the little rubber stopper had fallen off one of the arms of mine, and the exposed tube nicked up the bottom of my bass. Oh well, the 'relic' begins.

My 50th Anniversary (2010) Jazz bass developed a slight "texture" in the nitro finish from its inner case fur.

I tape over the rubber part of a stand, just in case. I only have one instrument with a nitro finish.

I think the Hercules stands have a special foam that is safe for use with nitro.

Nitro absorbs things. If you have a nitro cherry and nitro white in the same room the white one will turn pink in some areas from absorbing the red gassing off. It will absorb the dye from the case lining as well. It will also leave impressions of things like masking tape or stickers or whatever is stuck onto it.

Had a couple of issues with nitro and stands, but nothing that couldn't be resolved.

The worst thing that happened with these foam stands was not a reaction with a nitro finish, but with the finish on a Rickenbacker Blue Boy. Went through the blue finish to the red undercoat, primer, and to the wood. Not a happy bunny.

i painted two basses with rattle can lacquer. years later it still will react to the foam on guitar stands if left there long enough. even with the rubber coating on guitar cables. i just leave it hanging up.

I wrapped yarn around my stand's contact points. And yes, they did leave marks on my nitro finished P Bass.

I have a Hercules stand and wall hanger that I use and have had no issues with the nitro finishes on my Gibson guitars.

That said, I think you could use a regular stand with some cotton between the guitar and the stand and be just fine.

My ‘66 P spent a long time sitting in a nitro unfriendly stand before it was mine. It was pried off the stand after sitting for years.

Another thing to be careful of are nitro unfriendly cases. Also, bubble wrap.

It’s wild to see white 60s nitro finishes you can tell sat in a smoker’s home for decades. The yellow they turn into looks very cool, but unfortunately, the smoke smell absorbs as well.

As a refinisher, I get a little chuckle out of all the things that damage nitro. More reasons that I refuse to refinish in nitro.

I see I'm not alone here and some good solutions for minimizing the damage to nitro. Sensitive stuff! I'm going to wrap cotton cloth around the contact points.
Hopefully that will solve the problem.

Yup, had a Protec case "melt" the bottom of a stored Nitro bass turning the contact point on the bottom into a wet mush which took it down to the wood

The translucent K&M stands are supposed to be safe for nitro finishes. I have the K&M 17540 E-guitar stand and the K&M Guardian 5 and store my Fender American Original 60s Jazz Bass in it.

My 2008 nitro Gibson Lp double cut never had a problem with stands or hangers but my ‘52 L4 now has a finish free section on the sides of the headstock.

I would probably wish that reversed…
